The Machickanee Players have begun rehearsals for the final play of their 40th season, the drama “12 Angry Jurors.”
The story contemplates the serious responsibility of 12 ordinary people as they consider the guilt or innocence of a young man accused of the murder of his father. Disagreement and conflict among them force the jurors to question their own morals and values as they face a decision which could cost a young man his life.
Written by Reginald Rose, it was originally produced as a one-act teleplay on the CBS Studio One anthology TV series. It was first staged as a play in 1955. Most famously, it was made into a movie in 1957 starring Henry Fonda. The players are following an adaptation by Sherman L. Sergel which is most similar to the Studio One version.
“It’s a timeless lesson about prejudice and jumping to conclusions, Director Jahn Mozey said. “I feel it’s especially important to present it at this time, when we have several high-profile court cases going on that are definitely fueled by emotion. I have a great cast, too — ranging from seasoned performers all the way to a 73-year-old who has never acted on stage before. It’s a great selection, similar to the different characters that make up the jury in the play.”
Spencer Lacy, who plays Juror Number Seven, likes that the show is ambiguous.
“We just don’t have enough information to know what happened,” Lacy said.
Performances will be held on May 3-5 and May 10-12. General admission is $20, while Sunday matinees are $16.
