The Shawano Community High School volleyball team was 5-0 before falling to Oconto Falls in the championship game of the Shawano volleyball tournament Saturday at SCHS.
Despite the loss to Oconto Falls (25-16, 25-12), Shawano coach Jean Wolff was pleased with her team’s performance.
“It was a very successful day for our Shawano volleyball team,” Wolff said. “They went 5-0 and throughout those games, they really did a good job of hitting consistently, setting up our offense and our serve-receive was outstanding.”
Shawano opened the tournament by defeating Clintonville 25-16, 25-20. The Hawks then topped Valders (25-16, 25-14), Oconto (25-22, 25-20) and Kewaunee (25-8, 25-18).
In the semi-final game, Shawano beat Peshtigo in the first game 25-17, but then lost its first game of the day, 25-22. The Hawks rebounded and finished off Peshtigo 15-8 in the third game to get to the final.
“Against Oconto Falls, they disrupted our serve-receive a little bit, which disrupted our offense,” Wolff said. “We struggled with them. We had some really good rallies with them, but we just didn’t get the points.
“Overall I was really proud of the way the girls played as a team. This group of girls played extremely well together and they’re very positive with each other. They make it easy on me to coach.”
Erika Dunnam had 24 kills, five blocks and eight service aces in the tournament. Tori Wiskow had 23 kills and seven blocks. Peyton Going had 17 kills. Isabella Gonzalez had 13 kills and six blocks. Annelies Young had 50 assists and 12 service aces. Madison McBride had 24 assists and 15 service aces. Haley Going had 16 digs and six service aces.
