Hortonville scored three second-half goals to deny Shawano Community High School’s bid for a Bay Conference soccer title Thursday in Hortonville.
The Hawks matched intensity with Hortonville for 55 minutes, but Marco Delbecchi scored his 22nd goal of the season, unassisted at the 55:22 mark to get the Polar Bears moving en route to their 3-0 win.
“Basically it was 0-0 at halftime, we came out and still had some intensity in the second half,” Shawano coach Bob Croschere said. “It was a lot like the last game, where they scored a sloppy one and just kind of slid from there.”
The Hawks also lost to Hortonville, 3-1, on Sept. 24.
Croschere said both matches came down to who scored first.
After Delbecci’s goal, Hortonville found the net again at the 63:28 mark when Geovani Belmar put his head on a corner kick in front of the Shawano goal.
With Shawano pressing to get back into the match, Hortonville scored its third goal on a two-on-one breakaway at 78:27. Dakota Honeycutt tipped the ball to Stefan Hartz, who put it past Shawano goalie Michael Meisner.
Meisner had three saves. Hortonville goalie Jacob Jennerjohn had five saves.
“(Jennerjohn) was in the right position a couple of times, made the five saves that he had,” Croschere said. “The other opportunities we had, we missed.”
Shawano had plenty of chances to take a lead, but several shots sailed wide of the goal.
“Any one of those go in,” Croschere said, “it’s a different game.”
The referees stayed busy in the second half as three yellow cards came out — two on Shawano and one on Hortonville — but the coach said the fouls were not due to frustration.
“I think a lot of the stuff was going on in the first half as well,” Croschere said. “The calls just weren’t there. Then we started getting some cards late.”
