If the opening tournament for the Shawano girls wrestling team is anything like the Dec. 2 event in Kimberly, the 2023-24 season will be full of great matches to watch.
The Hawks scored 262 points en route to a first-place victory against more than two dozen other schools.
“The Hawks were led by strong performances by Gwyn Hermann at the 100-pound weight class and by Macey Nelson in the 138-pound weight class,” Shawano coach Mike Homan said. “Both girls wrestled great this weekend and pinned multiple wrestlers on their way to the finals matches.”
Hermann and Nelson each placed second in their weight class, while Onna Hermann, Jenna Moede and Breleigh Thornock each finished third.
“Gwyn was tough and aggressive in her matches and dominated on her feet,” Homan said. “Macey was similar in her matches and pinned all but one of her opponents.”
“Every girl on the team fought hard this weekend and battled in every match,” Homan said. “I was proud of the heart that they showed and the way that they competed.”
Placing seventh for Shawano were Maddie Moesch, Caitlyn Moede, Ali Lemerond and Courtney Schenk. Vivian Waldburger placed eighth.
Shawano’s boys competed in a dual tournament against multiple schools at Luxemburg-Casco on Dec. 2 and finished the day with a 2-3 record.
The team won duals against Port Washington and Sheboygan South.
“Wrestlers that stood out this weekend were Carsen Herm 4-1, Drake Herm 4-1, Connor Chelberg 3-2, Dane Hodkiewicz 3-2,” Homan said. “The team wrestled very tough competition in a great tournament.”
