Ali Hanson placed first in the 100-yard butterfly and was named Bay Conference swimmer of the year as the Shawano/Bonduel high school girls swim team took second at the Bay Conference meet Thursday at Shawano Community High School.
Shawano/Bonduel scored 400 points with firsts in five of 11 events, but was edged out by Sturgeon Bay (435).
Hanson, a junior, swam a 1:00.74 in the 100 butterfly. She also finished second in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 24.90.
After the meet, Hanson was surprised by the conference honor.
“I’m excited,” she said. “I wasn’t really expecting it.”
“I’m very proud of her,” said Sharon Hanson, the Shawano/Bonduel coach and Ali’s mother. “She’s such a good sport. She gives everything when she swims.”
Sophomore Clare Martell won her two individual events. In the 100 breaststroke, she finished in 1:08.18, less than a second off the conference record. In the 200 individual medley she finished with a time of 2:21.80.
Hanson, Martell, Alyssa Anker and Malory Soper took first in the 200 freestyle relay.
Martell, Soper, Emme Quandt and Ailysh Tetting also won the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:59.12. Shawano/Bonduel also took second in the 200 medley with the team of Hanson, Anker, Whitney Banker and Carlie Hinnefeld.
“(Sturgeon Bay) just has a little more depth than we do in the freestyles,” Sharon Hanson said. “That shows that we have a little more depth in all of our strokes. High school swimming is a lot of freestyle.”
Shawano/Bonduel will next compete at the WIAA Division 1 sectional Nov. 9 at Neenah High School.
“It’s been a really good season,” Ali Hanson said. “All the girls have been so good, really competitive and we’ve won meets. It’s been a great season.”
