Orchestra students at Shawano Community High School will have more than musical talent on display during the 34th annual Golden Strings concert Friday and Saturday.
They will also be showing off what they can do when the show’s program, planning and promotion are also put in their hands.
Students were given the challenge of planning this year’s concert from beginning to end, including choosing their own theme and deciding the musical selections.
The result is “Movies, Rock N’ Roll and More,” which will feature “some of your favorite movie music, followed by a rockin’ good time,” according to the orchestra’s Facebook posting.
The program will also include some of the Golden Strings’ standard pieces.
Orchestra representatives giving a presentation at a Shawano School Board meeting this week said the orchestra wanted to go with music that most people would be familiar with as a way to engage the audience while allowing students to polish some old techniques and learn some new ones.
Students then arranged the music in the order they felt it should go in the program, wrote program notes, approved and hung posters for the event around town and consulted in the lighting that will be used for the show.
The Golden Strings Concert will be held Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. at Shawano Community High School, 220 County Road B.
Tickets can be purchased at the door and are $7 for general admission and $5 for seniors and students.
There will also be a necklace raffle on Saturday night to help the Shawano Community High School Music Booster Corporation. Raffle tickets can be purchased Friday and Saturday night, with the drawing on Saturday night.
