It has been 20 years since Karen Mihalski cleaned the closets and emptied the toy chest for a rummage sale. Now the next generation of the Mihalski family is ready to clear her home of outgrown clothes, little-used toys and a whole lot more.
The mother/daughter team of Mihalski and Jenny Jurecki are first-time participants in Falls Fun Fest, famous for its rummage sales. Their sale will take place at Mihalski’s Krakow Road home in Morgan. The women hope by holding their sale during the festival, they can attract the bargain-seeking crowd out their way.
“Our junk is someone else’s treasure,” Jurecki said.
Among their “junk” is Dad’s old fishing boat. “We retired now, so we upgraded,” Mihalski explained.
Hospital scrubs, a tandem bike, skis and ski boots are listed as other treasures waiting to be uncovered. A listing of rummage sales and a map showing their locations is available in this week’s Times Herald and The Bonus.
The annual Falls Fun Fest brings droves of people into the community looking for bargains, but that is only one aspect of the celebration, sponsored by the Oconto Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.
Previously held in early September, the event was delayed until late in the month to give it more of a fall flavor, chamber president Gail Yatso said. The Sept. 27-28 date also allows more time for youth football programs to form teams and practice before the tournament.
The chamber also considered the timing of other events in the area when setting a date.
“We didn’t want to compete with the surrounding festivals like Dairyfest and Abrams Day,” Yatso said.
Memorial Field will host a full day of activities Saturday, including a youth football tournament, craft/flea market and live music. The Oconto Falls Lioness Club will hold a chili cook-off.
“It will be a day of fun,” Yatso said.
At 3:30 p.m., the winner of a fishing boat will be selected in a raffle. Proceeds from the raffle will help purchase new welcome signs for Oconto Falls.
