Shawano County was among 48 Wisconsin counties designated as primary natural disaster areas due to damage and losses caused by excessive rain, snow and weather that caused winterkill between Jan. 1 and May 21.
The designation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture enables area farmers who suffered losses to seek low-interest emergency loans through the Farm Service Agency (FSA). As a contiguous county, Menominee County producers also are eligible.
Production loans will be based on the disaster year production compared to the previous three years. Loans for physical damages to property will be based upon the cost associated with repairing or replacing the property, which must be essential to the continuation of the operation.
Interest rates for actual loss loans that do not exceed $500,000 will be 2.25 percent. FSA is prohibited from making loans to applicants who can get credit elsewhere.
The deadline to file for a disaster loan is March 3.
