The Oconto Falls City Council on June 9 gave special recognition to three firefighters for their lengthy and dedicated service to the Oconto Falls Fire Department.
Jim Moynihan was honored for 50 years of service, and Bart Schindel and Fire Chief Tim Magnin were honored for 30 years. Moynihan received a ring with his name on it and the number 50. Schindel and Magnin received 30-year plaques.
Moynihan said membership in the department has changed over time.
“Today the fire department takes more training than I got, and they’re better equipped,” he said, as he received his award. “I had to wait three years to get boots!”
After the meeting, Magnin said the 30- and 50-year milestones indicate a deep commitment to the department.
“We’re just one of the few departments that have members with that many years of service,” he said.
Other longtime members attending the City Council meeting were Reuben Radke, with 55 years of service; William Grady, 47 years; and John Salscheider, assistant chief, 35 years.
Magnin commended all members of the department, saying it’s becoming harder and harder to find volunteers for the department because of work and family responsibilities.
“It’s a family commitment, even though it’s just the firefighters who are going out the door,” he said.
