Wisconsin had 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending July 21, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
The week was dry relative to previous weeks, allowing for a productive week for farmers. Fieldwork included harvesting hay and small grains.
Topsoil moisture condition rated 3% short, 79% adequate and 18% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 1% short, 72% adequate and 27% surplus.
Corn silking was 40% complete, five days ahead of last year and three days ahead of the five-year average. Corn in the dough stage reached 4%. Corn condition was rated 61% good to excellent, up three percentage points from last week.
Soybeans blooming was 47%, two days behind last year and four days behind average. Fourteen percent of soybeans were setting pods. Soybean condition was 60% good to excellent, up four percentage points from last week.
Oats heading was 96%, and 74% of the crop was coloring. Twelve percent of the oat for grain crop had been harvested. Oat condition was 78% good to excellent, unchanged from last week.
Winter wheat harvested for grain was 31% complete, four days ahead of last year and the average. Winter wheat condition was rated 81% good to excellent, unchanged from last week.
The second cutting of alfalfa hay was 78% complete, eight days behind last year and two days behind average.
All hay condition increased to 75% good to excellent, up four percentage points from last week.
Potato harvest was 9% complete. Potato condition increased to 89% good to excellent, up two percentage points from last week. Pasture and range condition decreased to 70% good to excellent, down one percentage point from last week.
