Douglas G. Wopshel, 79, of Shawano, passed away Saturday morning, Nov. 22, 2014, at the Evergreen Care Center in Shawano, where he had been a resident for the past four years.
Doug was born June 8, 1935, in Shawano, a son of the late Benjamin and Lucille (Hartleben) Wopshel.
He graduated from Shawano High School. Following school he entered the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany where he worked in demolitions.
Upon returning from the service he was employed at Becker Meats in Milwaukee. He then went to work for Sears & Roebuck Company at the distribution center in Wauwatosa.
On May 18, 1964, he was united in marriage to the former Elizabeth DeGolier at St. Veronica Catholic Church in Bayview, Wisconsin. The couple lived in the Milwaukee area until 1989 when Doug retired from Sears and the couple moved back to Shawano.
Doug was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Shawano. He enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth, of Shawano; three sons, Glen Wopshel and Kenneth Wopshel, both of Shawano, and Steve (Cheryl) Wopshel, of West Allis; one daughter, Wendy Wopshel, of West Allis; 12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass for Doug will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Shawano. Father Luke Ferris will be the Celebrant. Private family interment will take place on Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at the Wisconsin Veterans Home Cemetery in King, Wisconsin.
Relatives and friends may call at church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Military rites will be conducted by the AmVets Post 10 at Sacred Heart.
