Winning in dramatic fashion, the Bonduel High School football team improved to 2-0 with a 14-9 win over Peshtigo in a nonconference game Thursday in Peshtigo.
The Bears (2-0, 0-0 Central Wisconsin Conference-8) trailed 9-7 after giving up a safety on a high snap out of the back of the end zone on a punt in the fourth quarter.
The game turned when, with about three minutes remaining, Bonduel stopped Peshtigo near the 50-yard line on fourth down.
With no timeouts, the Bears’ Colton Dobratz capped the drive with a 20-yard touchdown throw to Danny Tauchen with 30 seconds left to play. Jacob Zeitler made the extra point, putting the Bears ahead 14-9.
“It was a very dramatic ending, it was a really well-played game,” Bonduel offensive coordinator Dave LaBerge said. “It was a defensive battle. Both teams fought hard.”
Peshtigo’s lone touchdown came in the second quarter on a Steve Strojny 8-yard run, putting Peshtigo up 7-0.
Bonduel running back Hunter Vanderlinden put the Bears on the scoreboard with a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
“Our kids, I thought, got outplayed in the first half, but we came back in the third quarter and got some momentum,” LaBerge said. “Then they came back and stole some momentum from us. It was a great game all the way to the end.”
Vanderlinden finished with 69 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Dobratz was five of 16 passing for 36 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.
Strojny finished with 17 carries for 54 yards to lead Peshtigo (1-1, 0-0 Marinette and Oconto). Peshtigo quarterback Dakota Keller was one for 11 for 20 yards and an interception.
