Club Notes: Shawano Area Writers

Shawano Area Writers met May 19 in the Elsie Engel Room at the Shawano Public Library. There were six members present: John Mutter, Tom Thorstenson, Svitlana Podgoma, Barb King, Marilyn Kroenke and Wendy Goerl. President Tom Thorstenson called the meeting to order. Minutes were approved. John Mutter presented the treasurer’s report. In new business, discussion was held on what could be improved for the student writing contest. Suggestions were having a microphone and a little stool for short readers. The website should be put on the program. A group photo should be taken of all winners and put in the papers. All winners of prizes and certificates should be notified by phone before the awards ceremony. A booklet could be made of winning poems and stories. Papers were passed out concerning a creative writing and photography contest. First place in prose and poetry provides $250 and $150 for overall winner in photography. Marilyn Kroenke started off the reading portion of the meeting with a story entitled “Why Are You So Angry?” When Marilyn and her husband had an insurance office, they ran into all kinds. One day, Marilyn was asked to take on a woman who was unhappy with her agent. Marilyn read through all her files and contacted Bunny who put her off. After several more attempts, Marilyn sat down with Bunny. Bunny was a frigid, mad person who didn’t want to accept help but just complain. Marilyn gave the case back, and said she had had enough of Bunny. Tom Thorstenson’s story was entitled, “The Legion of Amalgamated Super Crime Fighting Societies, Inc.” Although there are way too many superhero movies, most of which seem to be made by 4-year-olds, the society decided to interview candidates. Bruce had already picked two people with enhanced skills. There was The Flying Wall Puncher whose skill was flying and punching walls. Then there was the beautiful lady in skintight spandex who read minds. Wendy Goerl read part of the saga, “Gathering of Like Minds,” where Alex practices flying by putting on his white flying suit. He is knocked off course and finds a 22-bullet caught in his feathers. He quickly changes out of his suit into his regular clothes and meets two hunters. They are trying to find the big white crane one of them shot. The next meeting will be June 16.
