The Shawano Area Writers held a meeting June 16 in the Elsie Engel Room of the Shawano Public Library. Members attending were Tom Thorstenson, Manuel Moraleda, Barb King, Wendy Goerl, Trudy Bosman and Marilyn Kroenke.
President Tom Thorstenson called the meeting to order. The minutes were approved.
Treasurer John Mutter had a previous commitment, so Thorstenson read the treasurer’s report. The new officers are now able to sign for any money needs. Two officers must sign to take out money.
A discussion was held about self-publishing and the experiences some of the members have had trying to self-publish. Most members are using Kindle Direct Publishing. You can do the work yourself or for a fee, someone from the company will help you.
In new business, Trudy Bosman displayed her new book of poems entitled “I Praise You.”
Manuel Moraleda read two poems that were accepted for the 2021 and 2022 Wisconsin Poet’s Calendar. The theme for 2022 was Wisconsin myths. Moraleda wrote about the “Lake Winnebago Water Monster.”
Barb King read chapter 11 from her book “The Children in the Garden.” Jillian is talking to her counselor, Meghan, about all that has been going on at the new house. Meghan just warns her not to become too reliant on others for decisions. Jillian makes good decisions and needs to trust herself.
Marilyn Kroenke wrote a piece entitled “What Language Are You Speaking?” A talking keyboard helps us improve our computer literacy.
Wendy Goerl wanted us to decide between two chapters which should come first. These were the wine chapters from “Heart Stone: A Gathering of Like Minds.”
Trudy Bosman wrote a poem about the “Pie Bandit” who steals the filling and leaves the crust.
Tom Thorstenson read a story entitled “Magic Hat, Magic Coal, Magic Button Nose.” The figure of Frosty the Snowman is connected to a Native American tale.
Shawano Area Writers meets the third Thursday of every month in the Elsie Engel Room in the Shawano Library from 10 a.m. to noon. The next meeting is July 21.
