The Clintonville Park and Recreation Commission has instructed director Justin McAuly to get cost estimates for renovating the city’s outdoor swimming pool.
McAuly told the commission this week that usage at the outdoor pool has increased this summer. Revenue for the past two weeks was $6,080.66, with more than 100 people using the pool each day. Total revenue from the pool last year was more than $16,231; expenses were $39,213.
McAuly told the commission a pool company from Randolph advised him that the pool needs to be renovated soon. It was constructed in 1987, after three residents drowned in the Pigeon River while swimming, and upgraded in 2002.
McAuly estimated that the pool could be renovated for about $80,000 and would last 20 to 25 more years. He said the pool needs a strainer, boiler, pump and a vacuum. A new pool would cost about $500,000.
Commission member Don Jirschele noted that New London and Shawano both closed their outdoor pools.
“The costs are starting to add up,” he said.
“People don’t want to see that pool closed,” commission member Steve Kettenhoven responded. “We have been down that road.”
Commission chairwoman Gloria Dunlavy noted there are few outdoor pools around and it is important to have something special for the community.
