Ron Berna put his name at the top of the total track champions list at Shawano Speedway when he won the Late Model track championship Saturday night. He has eight track championships — five in the Late Model division and three in the IMCA Modified division.
Jason Czarapata won his third straight IMCA Modified track championship, while his cousin Brandon Czarapata won his first IMCA Stock Car title. Cody Hudson won the IMCA Northern SportMod championship, while Kevin Gross won the first-ever Mighty 4s championship at the speedway.
Shawano Late Models
Joe Reuter jumped out to the quick lead over Troy Springborn, Doug Blashe, Derek Janke and Justin Ritchie in the Late Model feature. Springborn began pressuring for the lead a couple of laps later and took the lead on lap six. Midway through the race Nick Anvelink joined the top five and began making his way to the front.
Anvelink moved to third with eight laps remaining and to second on the following lap. He gained a lot of ground on Sprinborn on the next lap as Springborn jumped the cushion in corners three and four. A caution on the next lap slowed the action. Springborn led two laps after the restart before making an outside pass of Springborn in corners one and two. Anvelink led the rest of the way and was followed across the line by Springborn, Berna, Brett Swedberg and Ritchie. It was Anvelink’s fifth feature win of the year.
IMCA Modifieds
Jesse Peebles led the first nine laps of the IMCA Modified feature when his car slowed after showing a puff of smoke. This gave Brad Rohloff the lead on the restart. He was followed by Jerry Wilinski, Kevin Feck, Matt Oreskovich and Mark Weisnicht. Rohloff extended his lead over the next several laps. A caution came out after the white flag waved, deeming the race complete. Rohloff took the win over Wilinski, Feck, Oreskovich and Johnny Whitman. It was Rohloff’s second feature win of the year.
IMCA Stock Cars
The first part of the IMCA Stock Car feature was plagued by cautions. Harley Simon, who led the first six laps, relinquished the lead to Brandon Czarapata on the final restart of the race. Dan Michonski passed Simon for second on lap 10 and chased after Czarapata, who had built himself a comfortable lead.
With the top two cars pulling away from the pack, the best action was for third between Simon, Vern Stedjee and Mike Schmidt. Schmidt came out ahead in that battle finishing third behind Czarapata and Michonski. Simon and Stedjee rounded out the top five. The win gave Czarapata 14 features wins on the season.
IMCA SportMods
The IMCA Northern SportMod feature was plagued by six cautions, and only 10 laps were completed as the race went OVERSET FOLLOWS:over its time limit. Clint Forstner led the first eight laps of the race but was engaged in a battle with Rob Krull for the lead. Krull took the lead on lap nine, when a caution came out. Cody Hudson also retired to the pits at this time with apparent engine problems, but his points lead was big enough that he still won the championship. Krull led the next laps when another caution came out and the race was deemed complete. Krull was followed by Forstner, Lucas Lamberies, Jordan Barkholtz and Don Woller.
Mighty 4s
Jasper Drengler held a nine-point advantage in the point standings heading into the final night of racing for the Mighty 4s. Drengler took the lead of the feature on the second lap and led until lap nine. He eventually fell back to third but still was in position to win the championship. Drengler drove hard into corner three on the last lap to pass the top two cars. He couldn’t make his car stick and wound up hitting the wall. He wound up finishing 24th, giving the championship to Kasey Gross who finished fourth in the feature. Mike Montie won the feature, with Ralph Liegeois Jr. finishing second.
