Adventure in the air at fly-in

Approximately 7,000 people attended the Oconto Fly-in sponsored by EAA Warbirds Badger Squadron 6 on Sept. 14. Fifty planes, including six Warbirds, flew into the airport. Russian Yaks, a Navy TBM Avenger, L-19 Bird Dog, Stearman and a Beech 18 were in the skies. Pilots talked about their planes and shared their flying experiences with other pilots and visitors. A helicopter was on display, and children were able to sit in the cockpit. The opening ceremony was led by Oconto County veteran groups, with the Desert Storm veterans posting the colors. Pastor Steve Dahl gave the invocation. Bob Archer sang the national anthem. The event also included a World War II encampment and display of wartime vehicles. The Northern Aces Show Team flew radio-controlled planes throughout the day. The aircraft and helicopter rides were popular, especially rides on the Avenger. The car and tractor show doubled in size from 2012. Dash plaques went to the first 100 cars, and an additional 50 cars arrived. Five custom-made trophies were awarded. Sixty vendors and exhibitors promoted their crafts and organizations. Coasty, the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s little robot, entertained the children. The 2014 fly-in will be Sept. 13.
