After recording its first win of the season, the Shawano Community High School football team is looking to build on the gained confidence moving into Friday’s contest against Seymour.
The Hawks defeated New London 49-12 Friday as senior quarterback Jack Hanauer threw for 300 yards and five touchdowns and Kien Moorman added 109 yards on the ground.
Offensively, SCHS wanted to utilize Dylan Sumnicht in formations where he was matched up against a Bulldog linebacker, which led to his 147 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
But that was not even the biggest performance by a wide receiver on the night.
Senior Adam Bartz had nine catches for 153 yards and three touchdowns.
“I think it was big for our kids, big for our program to get a nice win this convincing because it shows the work we are putting in is being rewarded and it’s a lot easier to come to practice after a win,” SCHS head coach Alan Tomow said. “Our kids are a little more excited and the energy is there.”
The defense stepped up for SCHS, aided in preparation for the game because New London runs a offensive scheme similar to the Hawks’, by scoring two touchdowns, one on a fumble and another on an interception.
Tyrell Hesse scored on the pick-six, which was one of his four interceptions on the night. Tyler Onesti added another score on a 15-yard fumble recovery.
“It is a lot more exciting to come in after a win because we can still have constructive criticism,” Tomow said. “It’s a lot easier when we are talking about fixing things after a win. The energy has been there. We had a good lift on Saturday, and even (Monday). It is a lot more exciting, positive and hopefully we can keep building on it.”
Now, the focus moves ahead to a Seymour team that lost to Menasha 28-7 Friday. Menasha defeated the Hawks (1-3, 1-1 Bay Conference) 56-0 two weeks ago.
Tomow expects a physical game from the Thunder (2-2, 1-2 Bay), who are known to grind out games on the ground. But he thinks with smart play, just like his team was able to do against New London, the Hawks can succeed.
“For us, it is about just understanding and playing good assignment football and what they are trying to do and literally just taking it one play at a time,” Tomow said.
