Chargers, Wildcats come up short in baseball sectional finals

Lena and Wittenberg-Birnamwood baseball teams each came within a game of advancing to the state tournament, but each was defeated June 10 in their sectional final games. Division 3 Wittenberg-Birnamwood advanced to the sectional final after beating Oconto 3-0 at Chilton High School. Seeded at the top in their bracket, the Chargers moved on to face Kewaunee, second seed in its bracket, after Kewaunee beat Chilton 1-0. Kewaunee prevailed in the sectional final 6-5 to move on to the state tournament. Wittenberg-Birnamwood, which won the CWC East with a 13-1 record, finished the season 26-3 overall. According to wissports.net, Zandyr Barke led the Chargers with a .494 batting average, followed by Owen Dickman with a .410. Dickman and Oliver Fraaza each had 26 RBIs. Chris Sippl recorded 10 wins on the mound, and Barke had six. Division 4 Lena, seeded No. 1, first defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 4-3 in the sectional semifinal game at Memorial Field in Plover. Pacelli, also seeded No. 1 in its bracket, advanced to the sectional final with a 6-3 win over Gibraltar/Washington Island. In the sectional final game, Pacelli moved on to state with an 8-1 victory over the Wildcats. Lena finished the regular season in a two-way tie for second in the Marinette & Oconto Conference with a 9-3 record. The team was 14-7 overall.
