Farms are businesses that need to be profitable to survive, and effective and efficient pest management is necessary for profitable crop production.
Pests, which farms need to manage each year, include weeds and some insects and diseases. Effective marketing of grain produced on a farm can also improve profitability.
Farms in the region have an upcoming opportunity to learn more about effective pest management techniques and to assess the current grain marketing situation and how various techniques and approaches may help them in their marketing endeavors. The two discussions are being held March 19 at Lena Town Hall, 6087 Goatsville Road, Lena.
The grain marketing discussion group will meet at 8:30 a.m. and begin with a market overview and then focus on participants’ views on marketing opportunities. Discussion will be moderated by regional crops and soils educator Scott Reuss, with the discussion topics, direction and possible future meetings for further discussion set by the participants.
Reuss will also lead the pest management workshop event, which will begin at 10 a.m. Consistently problematic and new and emerging pest issues will be featured in the discussion. Current management recommendations, new techniques to consider and scouting protocols will be featured. Economic thresholds for insect and disease pests of grain and forage crops will be reviewed, as control measures need to have a positive return on investment, especially in the tight margin year 2024 is expected to be.
Coffee and doughnuts will be provided, which are sponsored by the Extension offices of Oconto, Marinette, Shawano and Langlade counties. Registration is not required.
