Brenda Shimon is the new associate principal at Pulaski Community Middle School.
She replaces Erin Adams, who served seven years in the role.
“We are thrilled to have her join our PCMS family, as she brings with her a wealth of knowledge and expertise in working with students, staff, families and curriculum,” said PCMS principal Pat Fullerton. “Brenda’s dedication and passion for education are truly commendable, and we are excited to witness the positive impact she will have on our school community.”
She has worked for the Southern Door School District for 25 years, starting as a middle school science teacher and then transitioning to director of pupil services. Her last five years were spent as middle school principal and district curriculum director.
“Brenda’s experiences with curriculum, instruction, assessment and student services will be a great addition to both at the middle school and district level,” said Jenny Gracyalny, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning. “She has a passion to meet each and every student’s needs and will carry on our work with Professional Learning Communities. We are eager to bring her on board in PCSD (Pulaski Community School District).”
Shimon is a 1992 graduate of Southern Door High School. She graduated from St. Norbert College with a bachelor’s degree in science and education. Her master’s program for licensure in principalship, curriculum and pupil services were all through Viterbo University.
“I was attracted to PCMS because of the focus on students and PCMS having inclusive connections with the community,” Shimon said.
Oconto County receives $8,687 in emergency funds
Tri-County United Way has announced that Oconto County has been chosen to receive $8,687 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.
The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by the U. S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; The Jewish Federations of North America, The Salvation Army; and, United Way Worldwide.
A local board will determine how the funds awarded are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds and any additional funds made available under the phases of the program.
Under the terms of the grant from the National Board, local agencies chosen to receive funds must be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs, and have a voluntary board if they are a private voluntary organization.

Genealogical society updating school info
The Oconto County Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. July 13 at the Suring Municipal Building, 604 E. Main St., Suring.
The group will organize and update school records of local schoolhouses of Oconto County. The society is also searching for stories on local teachers and schools and hopes that the public may have yearbooks, photos, articles, scrapbooks, or historical items of schools.

Kids From Wisconsin coming to Shawano
The Kids From Wisconsin will be providing their own fireworks, of a sort, as the traveling youth performance group returns July 5 to Shawano Community High School, 220 County Road B, Shawano.
The show begins at 7 p.m., but prior to that, there is a free performing arts workshop, Realize Your Dream, for children ages 7-14.
One of the performers, Nathan Edwards, is from Shawano. He is studying clarinet, saxophone, and flute at University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He plays in the jazz ensemble, symphonic wind ensemble and other chamber groups. Edwards’ favorite styles to play include Dixieland, funk, Broadway, and contemporary classical. Previously, Edwards has played in the St. Norbert’s Youth Orchestra and the University of Louisville’s Honors Jazz Band.
Off stage, Edwards enjoys cooking fun meals and helping students with music at SCHS.
