The Walls of Wittenberg Art Gallery is hosting its first photography-only art show, Life Through the Lens.
Life Through the Lens highlights five invited hobbyist photographers for a juried art show opening Sept. 17. The invited photographers for this year’s show are Brian P. Gutheinz, Bowler; Hans Schmitt, Birnamwood; Brent Zeinert, Wittenberg; Roger Bloemers, Wausau; and Tom Walchesky, Howards Grove.
Life Through The Lens will open with a free meet the photographers reception from 2-5 p.m. Sept. 17 at the gallery, 114 E. Vinal St., Wittenberg. A cash bar, free fresh apple cider, and light refreshments will be provided. The show continues on Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 2, open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The show will be judged by professional photographers for cash awards. Contest criteria include technical quality, creativity, presentation, lighting and impression. Each photographer will submit 10 of their best pieces to exhibit.
Previous art shows have included a variety of mixed media.
“We’ve always wanted to highlight the unique talents of our area’s photographers,” said Elaine Diffor, Walls of Wittenberg chairwoman. “This exhibit allows us the chance to singularly showcase this particular artform.”
Deadline for hosting Alice finals extended
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection has extended its deadline accepting bids from counties to host the Alice in Dairyland Finals until Oct. 20 for 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027. The request for proposals is available on DATCP’s website.
Each year, a different county hosts a series of finals events leading up to the selection of the next Alice in Dairyland. Local economic development organizations and promotional agriculture organizations are encouraged to consider this opportunity to welcome visitors and media professionals from around the state to their county.
The planning process begins at least one year in advance, including scheduling the current Alice in Dairyland to attend monthly events in the county to promote the finals and learn more about the impact of agriculture on that county. In mid-March, the host county holds a press conference to officially announce the top candidates for the next Alice in Dairyland.
The hosting process culminates in a three-day finals event, which includes agribusiness tours, media interviews, an impromptu question and answer session, individual interviews and candidate presentations. The impromptu question and answer session and finale banquet are open to the public as ticketed events and include opportunities to showcase local businesses, agritourism and other county highlights.
Dane County served as the host of the 75th Alice finals in 2022 and Walworth County will host the 76th finals in 2023.
$30K up for grabs through Green Gifts
Cellcom is now accepting applications for the 2022 Green Gifts program.
Through Green Gifts, Cellcom donates proceeds from its cell phone recycling program to local organizations, programs and projects that are dedicated to or support the environment, ranging from environmental education to preservation to sustainability.
“Northeast Wisconsin has an abundance of lakes, rivers, forests, and wildlife. It’s what attracts many of us to the area, whether it’s for our residence or recreation, and it is up to us to protect these natural resources,” said Cindy Durand, senior director of marketing communications, government relations and sustainability at Cellcom. “We’re excited to support nonprofits that are leading the way as environmental stewards. These efforts pave the way for our communities to connect with nature by enhancing natural areas, providing educational programming, and spearheading research efforts.”
This year a total of $30,000 will be donated across Cellcom’s service area. Applications must be submitted by Sept. 22 at noon. The online application and additional criteria can be found at www.cellcom.com/greengifts. Award recipients will be notified in October.
Legion post selling meat at Mountain bar
American Legion Sylvan Post 44 is holding a gunless poultry shoot at 1 p.m. on Sept. 24 at O’Neil Halfway Bar, 15409 State Highway 32, Mountain.
Post officials will be raffling off packages of meat, poultry, sausages, bacon, beverages and items donated by local businesses. There will also be 50/50 raffles.
Post 44 is composed of veterans who are committed to helping other veterans, their families and the community.
Rosemaling, family history at next meeting
The Suring Area Historical Society will meet Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Suring Area Library meeting room, 604 Main St., Suring.
The speaker for the evening will be Dora Slang, who will be talking about her art of rosemaling, along with the ancestry of the Johnson family immigrating from Denmark. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
