Oconto River Trout Unlimited Without any meetings during COVID, the Oconto River Watershed Chapter of Trout Unlimited scheduled its first meeting of 2022 for 7 p.m. April 12 at the Lone Oak Gun in Gillett. One of the main topics for gathering will be the “Go Fund Trout 2022,” which focuses on raising funds to stock trout in the main Oconto River at public access points from Suring to County BB south of Gillett. This stretch of Oconto is less than ideal cold water for trout reproduction and is stockable with WDNR permit. This project started by the chapter in 2015 has been one of the most appreciated and most popular of all the many things the Oconto River chapter participates in. Each year stocking has consisted approximately 1,000 brown and rainbow trout of keepable sizes of 10 to 14 inches in length. We have reports from individuals over the years that these trout have been caught from the Oconto Falls Pond and upstream all the way to the south and north branches of the river. The chapter is seeking donations from all who feel this a worthy cause. Donations can be made to Trout Unlimited and mailed to Oconto River TU, P.O. Box 252, Gillett WI. Please note on your check “Fund Trout.” The chapter budgets $1,000 to start the fund, and our goal is $3,500 by April 15. Stocking of trout takes place during the last week in April. Other topics on agenda are spring boat landing cleanup, Trout in Classroom, stream habitat projects, youth fishing and casting events. After meeting activities include snacks and a welcoming raffle with prizes of fish tackle, packages of meat, refreshments and a drawing for cash.
