Local residents are encouraged to apply for seasonal jobs in Wisconsin’s Chequamegon-Nicolet and Michigan’s Ottawa national forests.
Four of the jobs — one forestry and three recreation positions — will be based at the U.S. Forest Service’s Lakewood office in Oconto County.
Interested applicants must apply online at usajobs.gov. Job announcements and descriptions will be available beginning Feb. 20.
“Our seasonal employees are the backbone of summer operations: keeping our campgrounds, trails and recreation sites open, safe and welcoming for visitors,” said Sitka Pence, deputy supervisor of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. “These positions offer meaningful work, hands-on experience and the chance to support public lands close to home.”
The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres in northern Wisconsin, while the Ottawa National Forest is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Both forests are recruiting for several positions, including recreation and visitor services; trail and campground maintenance; timber sale preparation; tree nursery work; and invasive plant control. The jobs are in addition to seasonal fire positions.
Other job openings throughout the Chequamegon-Nicolet include two recreation positions in Laona; one recreation position at the David R. Obey Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland; one forestry and two recreation positions in Eagle River and Park Falls; one recreation and one forestry position in Florence and Medford; one forestry position in Glidden; and one recreation position in Hayward and Washburn.
The Ottawa forest is also recruiting for several jobs, including one forestry position in Ironwood, Ontonagon and Watersmeet; one forestry and two recreation positions in Kenton; and one forestry and four recreation positions in Watersmeet.
Seasonal employees help improve trails, campgrounds and facilities for safer, reliable and enjoyable recreation experiences, according to Pence.
“Seasonal jobs can be a first step into a natural resources career, a way to build experience or simply a chance to spend the summer working outside,” she said. “We encourage anyone interested to apply.”
