Sacred Heart Catholic Parish and School held its Made for Mission program Aug. 15-16. The opportunity focused on service in little ways for middle schoolers around the Shawano community.
One exciting component was that two young adults who led this year’s program, Sami Boehm and Nick Klicka, were also a part of the Diocese of Green Bay’s program called Love Begins Here in 2021 at Sacred Heart. Boehm and Klicka came to visit Sacred Heart during last school year on the middle school boys retreat, during Faith Formation on Wednesdays and during school hours.
Made for Mission allowed participants to serve at Shawano Area Matthew 25 and gain a deeper understanding of homelessness in Shawano, as well as ways that they can help. The participants also toured the Sun Drop Museum and hung out with program leaders on the school campus.
Shawano quilter to showcase four pieces
Quilters from across the country submitted their best work for judging in this year’s Great Wisconsin Quilt Show.
Pamela Kuck, of Shawano, and four of her quilts — “Fields and Flowers,” “Full Circle,” “Lattice and Lace” and “Tumbleweed Waltz” — have been selected to compete in the 2022 Great Wisconsin Quilt Show Quilt Contest. Her quilts will be displayed for more than 20,000 visitors to the annual event in Madison this September.
Every quilt has a story.
“To make handmade flowers using many sizes of silk ribbons and permanent dyes was the inspiration,” Kuck said of her “Fields and Flowers” quilt. “Kaffe Fassett’s paperweight collection made the perfect cathedral window insets for the quilt core. To complete the design, I used larger silky iridescent cathedral windows to frame each flower type in the border.”
Her quilt “Full Circle” was also inspired by a specific material choice.
“I was intrigued with the idea of using coffee filters as a base for strip quilting,” Kuck said. “The background fabric used two sets of fat quarters I unearthed while on the island of Roatán … an extremely rare find. This quilt was entirely pieced using QAYG method and capped off with a scalloped border.”
For the first time in three years, The Great Wisconsin Quilt Show returns to the Alliant Energy Center in Madison as an in-person event, welcoming quilt lovers from across Wisconsin and throughout the United States to join together and celebrate the art of quilting. It will run Sept. 8-10.
Heisler Legionnaire of the year for Post 44
Al Heisler has been named the Legionnaire of the Year for 2022 for American Legion Sylvan Post 44.
Heisler is an Army veteran and served in Vietnam. He has been a member of Post 44 for 41 years. His dedication to serving veterans, their families and the community has always been a priority for Heisler.
Heisler has served as commander for 4½ years and chaplain for 8 years. He’s also been a board member and represents Post 44 by attending many conferences. Even after serving as an officer for many years, Heisler gives guidance and direction to his comrades to help them improve. His commitment to the Legion and Post 44 continues by being on the honor guard. He also volunteers countless hours in many of the post’s fundraisers.
Heisler also loves spending time with his family. His grandchildren are his pride and joy. He enjoys watching the Packers win and western films.
Cell.Plus takes charge of U.S. Cellular business
The Shawano corporate U.S. Cellular location has completed the transition of ownership to U.S. Cellular agent Cell.Plus, headquartered in Baraboo.
Casey Kohlin has remained on staff to manage the Shawano location after serving as a front-line associate since the opening of the location two years ago.
This transition is a part of an expansion that will bring the number of Cell.Plus stores to 21 sometime in early to mid-2023. The company’s U.S. Cellular locations will range throughout central Wisconsin from the Mississippi River to Lake Michigan. Cell.Plus corporate offices are in Baraboo where the company began in 1995.

Last ride leads to potato pancake breakfast
Shawano Pathways is inviting bicycling enthusiasts to close out the Bike the Barn Quilts weekend by joining the group for one last ride.
At 8:30 a.m. Sept. 25, participants will gather at Memorial Park for registration and depart at 9 a.m. The ride will proceed to St. Jakobi’s Lutheran Church, W8089 County Road A, Shawano, for its potato pancake breakfast.
The ride is free and open to participants of all ages. Breakfast prices are $10, $5 for children 6-12 and free for children 5 or younger.
Pathways is encouraging participants to wear helmets and bright clothing.
Kelly Lake to hold sanitary district meeting
Kelly Lake Sanitary District 1 will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 13 at the district office building, 9535 Green Acres St., Suring.
The agenda will be posted at Kelly Lake Kwik Stop, two posting boards around Kelly Lake and on the office door.
