Agencies taking back drugs this weekend
On April 30, law enforcement agencies in Shawano County will participate in the Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative.
Drugs can be dropped off from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bonduel Police Department, 207 S. First St., Bonduel, or Stockbridge-Munsee Public Safety, W13455 Camp 14 Road, Bowler.
The goal of the event is to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal of prescription medications, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications.
Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold, according to a Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department press release. Unused drugs that are flushed can contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs helps save lives and protects the environment.
Participants may dispose of solid, non-liquid medications by removing the medication from its container and disposing of it directly into a disposal box or into a clear sealable plastic bag. Plastic pill containers should not be collected. Blister packages are acceptable without the medications being removed.
Liquids will be accepted during this initiative. However, the liquids, creams and sprays must be in their original packaging and evenly distributed within the boxes of collected solid prescription medications.
Illicit substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative and should not be placed in collection containers.
Law enforcement officers and volunteers at the drug-take back sites will provide education on how to safely dispose of medical needles.
Groups cleaning up trails April 30
Shawano Pathways and Friends of Mountain Bay Trails is looking for members of the public to join them in their annual spring walk and trail clean up to be held April 30, starting between 10-10:30 a.m.
Participants will have the choice of meeting at the parking lot of All Aboard Nutrition, 620 S. Main St., Shawano, or Four Seasons Resort, 201 N. Airport Road, Shawano. Volunteers will have the opportunity to walk on one of the in-town park to park loops or the Mountain Bay Trail and clean up along the way. Teams will leave on various routes as they gather at each location.
Participants are encouraged to wear bright clothing and gloves. Garbage bags, water and snacks will be provided.

Bonduel native gets bank promotion
Kari De Smith has taken on the duties of operations manager for the Adell location of National Exchange Bank and Trust in addition to her current role as operations manager in Cedar Grove.
De Smith joined the bank in 2015 as a teller/customer service representative. She then became team leader/supervisor before being named operations manager in Cedar Grove in January 2021. With this promotion, De Smith will oversee deposit operations at both offices. She will lead her teams in providing excellent customer service and ensure smooth and efficient retail office operations including scheduling, hiring and training.
De Smith grew up in Bonduel, where she attended Bonduel High School. She has received certificates in personal banking and branch management from the Wisconsin Bankers’ Association and a supervisor certificate from the American Bankers Association.
De Smith resides in Oostburg today with her family, where she is active in the community as a part of Kids Hope USA Mentoring Program, the Cedar Grove Christmas Village Market Committee, and treasurer for the Holland Mutual Insurance Board.
Local students win 13 SkillsUSA awards
Thirteen awards were presented to local teens during the SkillsUSA Wisconsin State Leadership and Skills Conference held April 5-6 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison and Madison Area Technical College.
Jose Lagunes from Bonduel High School took silver in high school barbering, while Bonduel’s Conner Weckler took bronze.
Jerry Wetzel from Bonduel High School took silver in cabinetmaking.
John Wolford from Oconto Falls High School took silver in electrical construction wiring.
Meghan Wondra, Julia Lorbiecki, Graci Zuleger and Jess Ewing from Bonduel took gold in entrepreneurship.
Phillip Heroux from Gillett Secondary School took gold in information technology service.
Christina Ciancio from Gillett took bronze in the job skill demonstration category.
Grant Bouche from Oconto Falls took bronze in motorcycle service technology.
Marli Novy from Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School took bronze for the prepared speech category.
Jacob Cole from Oconto Falls took silver for sheet metal.
Kayle Hines from Oconto Falls won bronze for technical drafting.
Noah Techlin from Bonduel Middle School took gold in welding sculpture, while Morgan Staszak, also from Bonduel, took silver.
