The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department is down two officers — one human and one K-9.
Deputy Cody Vigue’s last day was March 1. When he quit to accept a job with the Menominee County Sheriff’s Department, he took his K-9 partner Rascal with him.
“They are going to purchase the dog from SOS K-9,” Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner said about the neighboring county’s plans to buy the dog.
Officials figured Rascal is about two-thirds of the way through his career. Valued at $15,000 new, the dog’s value is $5,000 today, which is what Menominee County will pay for him.
Of course, that money would go back to SOS K-9 to purchase the next dog,” Lenzner said. “It seems like it’s going to be awhile before we can get another dog.”
Rascal joined the department in December 2021.
Deputy Jacob Ostrowski is the handler of Ruckus, the department’s newest K-9. The dog has been with the department since October 2024.
As for the deputy position, the county website indicates the job will be posted until 12:59 a.m. March 14.
“We do have a process, and we probably have about 10 applications,” the sheriff said. “Our goal is always to try to get someone hired quickly.”
The wage is between $31.28 and $36.75 per hour.
