For the first time in three years, St. John’s Lutheran Church in Gillett is ready to present an Easter cantata.
“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” written, arranged and orchestrated by Bradley Knight, is a 45-minute performance that includes many well-known Easter melodies and also some contemporary songs.
A cantata is a narrative piece of music for voices with instrumental accompaniment. The church was in the middle of rehearsing its 2020 Easter cantata when COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns were enforced that March.
“When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” is scheduled to be presented at the church, 101 W. Main St., Gillett, on four occasions during the week following Easter. Performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. April 19, April 21 and April 22, and 2 p.m. April 24.
As it has been for over 12 years, the ecumenical choir is composed of performers from all over the area representing many congregations. This season, singers are from St. Anne Parish (Lena), Our Redeemer Lutheran (Suring), St. Paul’s Lutheran (Bonduel), Lena Seventh-day Adventist, Christ Lutheran (Hintz), St. John’s Lutheran (Morgan), Mt. Olive Lutheran (Suring), St. John’s Lutheran (Hayes), St. Michael’s Catholic (Suring), Zion Lutheran (Marinette), St. John’s Catholic (Gillett), Maple Valley Community (Suring), and St. John’s Lutheran (Gillett).
The cantata features Micki Carlson, Brenda Danielson, John Darga, Judy Darga, Jason Fenendael, Jenny Fenendael, Anita Graziano, Phillip Heroux, Kurt Hicks, Maddy Holmes, Carol Jossie, Darlene Kapelke, Patti Konkle, Emily Limberg, Joe Quade, Daryl Schroeder, Patty Stabbe, Bonnie Tousey, Chique Tousey-Tabar, Mark Vorpahl, Wendy Vorpahl, Cathy Wocking, Sandy Wright, Doug Yahnke and Rick Zill. Wayne Strei directs, and Dan Wright is the sound technician.
There is no charge for admission, but a freewill offering will be accepted. A dessert reception will follow each performance.
