The Oconto Falls High School Drama Team will soon be closing down its fall season with an opportunity for the community to see its competitive one-act entry of Dwayne Yancey’s “Code 40: Verona.”
A community performance will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 11 in the Falls Area Performing Arts Center at Oconto Falls High School. Tickets can be purchased online at https://ofps.revtrak.net/pac-ticket-boxoffice/ for $5 or at the door for $6.
Since mid-October, the team has been participating at the different levels of the Wisconsin State Interscholastic Theatre Festival. Unfortunately, their season ended shortly without the chance to return to the State competition, according to director Gayle Gander.
In this particular play, it’s the end of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” but with a modern twist as a police drama, in which incompetence and political pressure rule the day. Balthasar and Friar Lawrence still flee the bloody scene in the Capulet tomb and are caught by church security guards. The police are called to investigate, and the crime is pinned on Balthasar. With political pressure shadowing the mayor and budget cuts hindering the solution of the case, will Balthasar accept a plea bargain?

Pathways giving annual Report to the Community
Shawano Pathways will hold its annual social and Report to the Community on Nov. 15, at the American Legion Post 117, 850 S. Lincoln St., Shawano.
A program on “Buggies, Bikes and Covered Bridges: The Conflicts, Challenges and Communities that Shaped the Mountain Bay Trail” will be featured.
Guest speakers include Amish elder Johnny Yoder, who was involved in the original development of the Mountain Bay Trail, and Steve Charlier, Shawano County park ranger at the time.
Pathway’s annual student photography contest entries will be on display and winners will be announced.
The event begins at 5 p.m. with a social hour, silent auction and 50/50 raffles followed by the program and traditional Amish haystack dinner with pie at 6pm. Tickets are $22 for members and $25 for non-members. A cash bar will be available.
A recap of 2022 accomplishments and plans for the upcoming year will be announced.

Gillett library keeping busy during November
The Gillett Public Library is all ready for November, with a variety of programs for everyone from the young to the young-at-heart.
Every Wednesday, the library — at 200 E. Main St., Gillett — hosts the role-playing game Pathfinder and other community board games from 1-3 p.m. Patrons are invited to bring a group to play or come join the fun.
Local author Casey Cardel will be at the Gillett Library Community Center, 204 E. Main St., Gillett, on Nov. 16 from 5-6 p.m. to speak about her book, “Better Gnomes and Gardens.”
Seniors needing Medicare Open Enrollment can come to the Gillett Library Community Center on Nov. 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Since Gillett schools will be on hiatus for Thanksgiving week, the library will have programs to keep kids busy. On Nov. 21, staff will have Science Skillz from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and Legos from 2-3 p.m. On Nov. 22, there will be a Thanksgiving storytime in the library, which will include a librarian making her debut in a puppet show for kids from 11-11:30 a.m.
The library’s Teen Tuesday program for November will be making a book wreath out of old books from 4-5 p.m. Nov. 22.

Toys for Tots begins its 2022 campaign
The United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program of Eastern and Central Shawano County’s 2022 campaign is now underway.
There is an online application process available for individuals. By going to http://shawano-wi.toysfortots.org, residents can request a toy or sign up to volunteer, and businesses can request a drop box for toy donations.
The registration period will be open until Dec. 5. Applicants will receive up-to-date emails with information on their application. The distribution of the toys for single families will be at the Shawano County Job Center, 607 E. Elizabeth St., Shawano.
The current qualifications are that legal guardians of children must request toys, and they must reside in eastern and central Shawano County. Children must be age 15 or younger.
The program is looking for volunteers throughout the county to assist with work in the warehouse. Volunteers assist in sorting and on distribution days in December.
SAYPRO is placing over 100 collection boxes throughout Shawano County and will accept toy donations during the Nov. 26 Holiday Stroll at Franklin Park in Shawano. Toys can also be dropped off until Dec. 8 at State Farm, 207 S. Main St., Shawano.

Another gunless poultry shoot coming in November
American Legion Post 44 will hold its next gunless poultry shoot starting at 1 p.m. Nov. 12 at Schoolhouse Bar, 14007 State Highway 32, Mountain.
The post will be raffling off packages of meat, poultry, sausages, bacon, beverages and items donated by local businesses. There will also be 50/50 raffles.
Townsend church to host Thanksgiving meal
St. John Lutheran Church in Townsend will host the community’s annual Thanksgiving Day dinner on Nov. 24.
The celebration will include a worship service at 10:30 a.m., time for fellowship and a traditional Thanksgiving dinner at noon. The menu includes turkey, dressing, potatoes both sweet and mashed, vegetables, coleslaw, cranberries, salad, dinner rolls and dessert.
The church is located at 17963 State Highway 32 in Townsend.
“We extend an open invitation to anyone who would enjoy having a place to go for Thanksgiving,” said Lynn Zimdars, one of the coordinators. “St. John’s Church is thankful that we can return to a traditional Thanksgiving meal this year.”
RSVP to Lorry Runge at 715-276-7313 by Nov. 21 so that event organizers know how much food to prepare. Curbside pickup is not being offered this year. A freewill offering will be taken to help cover costs.
Herald named Lions’ Student of the Month
The Lena Lions Club honored Makynna Herald, daughter of James and Nicole Herald, as Student of the Month for October.
Herald is a senior at Lena High School, where she participates in volleyball. She is a member of the student council and the National Honor Society. Her friends describe her as outgoing, thoughtful, determined, humorous and optimistic.
Herald’s hobbies include snowboarding, photography, shopping, crafting, working out and baking. Her community activities include helping with the Toss for Charity, Adopt-A-Family, the Bike Rodeo, Spookapalooza and making food for the food pantry.
Herald’s work experience includes babysitting, working at the Wooden Shoe as a prep cook and dishwasher and doing outdoor maintenance work at the Riverwood on Highway 22.
Herald plans to further her education in the field of psychology and will attending college in the future.
