Members of the Shawano County Public Property Committee voted Feb. 12 to begin the process of foreclosing on five parcels after owners refusal to pay back taxes and special assessments.
There are two lots on Ebert Street in Gresham, one on Red Lake Court in Gresham, one on Fourth Street in Mattoon and one on Mission Street in Wittenberg.
“Sounds like Gresham is interested in them,” said Nick Hesse, Shawano County’s facilities management director, regarding the Ebert Street properties.
County Board Chairman Tom Kautza said Mattoon officials might be interested in the property in that village at 328 Fourth St.
“It doesn’t border, but it’s right across the road from the ball diamond on the end of town (on County Road D),” Hesse said, adding that someone should reach out to village officials about the lot.
Kautza said he believed municipalities could purchase the parcels prior to the public auction.
Hesse said the maintenance staff locked down the two-story Wittenberg house at 502 S. Mission St. earlier in the week.
Emily Kazik, the new county treasurer, said she wasn’t sure yet how much is owed on any of the properties, but she would have that for the executive committee, which will meet and set the asking price for the parcels.
