The Suring Area Historical Society meeting was held March 21 at the Suring Village Hall meeting room. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all 15 members and guests present. The meeting was called to order by president Adelaide Boettcher.
The secretary and treasurer reports were approved as read. Balance in the account is at $85,361.41. The motion was made and seconded to purchase three CDs of $15,000 each to increase our interest on our moneys — one 3-month, one 6-month and one 12-month after April 1.
The roof over the front show windows should be repaired as soon as weather permits. The windows will be updated and repairs made after the roof is fixed. The new engine room is coming along quite well. The Easter display is up.
The annual breakfast featuring kitchen memories April 23 was discussed. We will have several displays at the breakfast. Set-up for the breakfast will be at 2 p.m. April 22. We thank the St. John Lutheran Ladies and the 4-H group who will be serving the breakfast April 23 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers are needed on April 22 to get things set-up for the breakfast. Letters have been mailed for the breakfast, and posters are up. Tickets are available at the Suring Area Library and from SAHS Members.
The computer will be installed at the museum, and Shannon will check into a hotspot. We are also looking for an office desk for the museum. The museum will be open May 27 with a bake sale at the museum. June 3 will be game day at the museum. Our May brat frys will be May 5, opening weekend for fishing, and May 26, Memorial Day weekend. Our brat frys this year will be held at the Suring Area Library parking lot.
We want to thank Lois Brazeau for the donation of the soda fountain from the Suring Drug Store, which is on display at the museum. Stop in and see our new pictures and displays that will be new this year at the museum.
At 7 p.m. we headed to the Buhrandt Farm Maple Syrup Shack on Elm Road in Suring to get the history on making maple syrup by Steve and Kelly Jo Buhrandt. The tour was truly enjoyed by all attending the tour. It was a beautiful evening and we were treated to good ice cream with maple syrup.
The Lawrence Buhrandt family started making maple syrup with the Allan Tuschy and Joel Hischke families. When that group got too big, the Buhrandts went on their own. They have become very automated and it was interesting to hear the changes in the process.
Steve taps 2,000 trees and gathers 600 gallons of sap a day with the sugar content of 2.2 to 2.4. It takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup. Steve is a member of the Wisconsin Maple Syrup Association and sells his syrup at the local Suring Auto in Suring and also at the Oconto County Fair along with different market places in Shawano. Steve makes about 810 gallons of syrup a year. He also makes maple syrup pops.
The whole process is very interesting and amazing. We thank Steve and Kelly for a very special evening for our SAHS members.
