Shawano County’s 376th barn quilt, featuring a bald eagle in flight, is now on display on a building owned by Otto Schultz at E10646 County Road C, Clintonville.
Schultz purchased 38 acres five years ago and has thought about getting a barn quilt ever since.
“I’ve seen the barn quilts around Shawano County, and my dad has one on his barn, so I thought it would be nice to get one too,” Schultz said. His dad, Tim, got a barn quilt for his barn at 1521 E. Main St. in Embarrass, which is adjacent to Schultz’s land, in 2011.
Schultz and his girlfriend, Melissa Thomack, picked out the quilt pattern.
“We wanted something simple,” Thomack said, “and since we see bald eagles soaring over our property quite often, thought it would be nice to have an eagle featured in the pattern.”
Schultz added that since his mother and Thomack’s dad have died during the past few years, they feel that every time they see an eagle, it’s their parents watching over them and letting them know they are OK.
“That’s why we named the quilt ‘Watching Over You,’” he said.
Thomack is a hairdresser in Clintonville, and Schultz hauls fuel and oil throughout the Midwest, something he’s done for the past five years.
The quilt was painted by the Shawano County barn quilt committee and was put on display by LeRoy Raddant and his grandson, Keenan, both of whom work for Raddant Electric in Shawano.
