AROUND THE COMMUNITY: WOWSPACE showcases student artwork

The Walls of Wittenberg is hosting the “Emerging Talent VIII” exhibit through June 12, sponsoring it with Cirrinity. The exhibit features artwork from Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The show is an opportunity to highlight the artistic talents of aspiring artists who present projects in a variety of mediums — including watercolor, sculpture and mixed medium. Art teachers Naomi Engleke, Diana Wendler and Keven Brunett set aside student art projects throughout the year, carefully selecting exhibit pieces. Over 110 pieces of art will be on display in the WOWSPACE, 204 W. Vinal St., Wittenberg. “This is one of our favorite shows,” said Elaine Knab, WOW president. “It is wonderful to experience the creativity of our up-and-coming artists.” The exhibit will run weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The exhibit concludes following the Wittenberg Community Days Parade with a reception at the WOWSPACE. Dinner raises $6,000 for library expansion A dinner held May 14 at McCauslin Country Club officially began a drive for funds to renovate and expand Lakes Country Public Library in Lakewood. Almost $6,000 was raised at the dinner, but the building committee realizes it has a long way to go. “As we have repeatedly said, the lack of any kind of school in our area makes us the only community learning and information center available,” said Tom Thielke, building expansion committee co-chairman. “Expansion has been on the table for over 15 years, but now we are at a tipping point. Our library is severely cramped for space and unable to meet the rising demand for 21st century services our patrons need and deserve.” Fundraising co-chairwoman Kathleen Marsh agreed, noting that community members cherish the library. That’s what prompted the fundraising motto of “The little library we love,” she said. “Lakes Country Library does offer the usual fare; books, newspapers, periodicals, DVDs, manipulatives, etc. But it must do so much more,” Marsh said. “It is the only public place in northern Oconto County for free, fast and reliable broadband, getting copies made, tutoring from experienced staff, help with employment issues, accessing telemedicine, special children’s programs and so much more.” Donations of any size are being accepted. Checks payable to “LCPL Building Fund” may be dropped off or sent to Lakes Country Public Library, 15235 State Highway 32, Lakewood, WI 54138. Students learn about downtown, government Third grade students from Olga Brener Intermediate School spent May 23 visiting downtown Shawano businesses and city facilities, 11 stops in all. To prepare for their adventure, students each received a visitor’s guide from the Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce and learned about the importance of shopping local from Lindsay Johnson, Shawano Downtown Business Improvement District coordinator. Students met with Matt Hendricks from the Shawano Park and Recreation Department at the splash pad, where he told students about his job and how the parks are maintained in Shawano. Students learned about how city and county governments work when they visited both Shawano City Hall and the Shawano County Courthouse. City Clerk Lesley Nemetz showed students how to cast a ballot in elections. Main Street included stops at Stubborn Brothers, The Stock Market, Full House Realty and Shawano Barbers. Student lunches were delivered to Franklin Park by school personnel, and then students visited Associated Bank and the Shawano County Library.
