Shawano County Brunch on the Farm planning is in full swing for 2023.
Synergy Family Dairy near Pulaski will be hosting the 2023 Shawano County Brunch on the Farm on June 25. The event will be a traditional, in-person event with opportunities for guests to see a modern dairy farm and have a morning of family fun. The brunch will have a hearty breakfast, ice cream, cows and many activities for family fun and socialization.
Synergy Family Dairy is owned and operated by Jay and Heather Jauquet, along with their three children — Mason, Carter and Evan. They milk 650 cows, raise all their youngstock and own 565 acres. The Jauquets also work with neighbors to custom grow additional forages to round out the herd’s yearly feed supply.
Synergy’s herd is known for its high genetic merit. In May, they will be hosting the Breeder’s Bash, a dairy genetics sale highlighting their genetics and the genetics of neighbors and friends.
Synergy Family Dairy is a host for the Adopt-A-Cow program, which facilitates over 500 Wisconsin classrooms adopting calves from their dairy throughout the current school year.

Workshop to examine grain marketing issues
UW-Madison Division of Extension is conducting an event to help grain producers better understand marketing opportunities and tools and how to utilize those opportunities to their operations’ advantage.
The workshop will be held 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 21 at Cecil Village Hall, 111 E. Hofman St., Cecil. The registration fee of $20 includes materials, lunch, and snacks. Pre-registration is requested, to ensure that enough materials will be available for all participants.
Extension Crops/Soils Educator Scott Reuss will be leading participants through discussion of the various tools and techniques that they may choose to utilize in their marketing efforts, as well as sample exercises and analyzing pricing opportunities for the upcoming crop harvest or for grain currently in storage. The goal of the workshop is for farms to be able to develop a simple, straightforward marketing plan that improves their confidence in grain marketing decisions.
Other discussion points will include how a marketing plan works with crop insurance, grain market cycle timing and how to use that cycle to watch for pricing opportunities, and the differences between pre- and post-harvest marketing goals.

SCHS to host solo and ensemble music festival
Students from area schools will participate in a Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) sanctioned District Solo and Ensemble Music Festival hosted at Shawano Community High School on March 23.
During the festival, which is free and open to the public, students will perform vocal and instrumental solos, duets, trios and small ensembles before an adjudicator.
WSMA music festivals annually attract thousands of students from middle, junior high and high schools throughout Wisconsin. The festival will draw students from a number of area schools, including SCHS, Bonduel High School, Pulaski High School and Shawano Community Middle School. Dan O’Connell, music director from SCMS, will be serving as the festival manager.

WRLHS hosting fish fries, trivia event
Wolf River Lutheran High School will be hosting several events in the next few weeks to fundraise for the only parochial high school in the area.
Two fish fry evenings are taking place from 4-7 p.m. March 17 and April 7 at the school, W7467 River Bend Road, Shawano. Adults have a choice of three pieces of fish for $11 or three chicken strips for $9. The meals include French fries, cole slaw, rye bread and dessert. There is also a kids meal for $5 with one piece of fish or chicken, which includes the choice of fries or applesauce. There will be water and coffee available. Guests can eat in-person or carry out the meals.
On March 19, WRLHS will host its annual trivia event, which starts at 1:30 p.m. The theme for the event is “Number One Sports Fan.” Participation costs $10 per person, but the event provides free babysitting, popcorn and drinks. Sponsorships are available ranging from $100 to $500.

Next gunless poultry shoot coming to Wabeno
American Legion Post 44 is holding another gunless poultry shoot starting at 1 p.m. March 25 at Rusty’s Bowl, 4489 N. Branch St., Wabeno.
The post will be raffling off packages of meat, poultry, sausages, bacon, beverages and items donated by local businesses. There will also be 50/50 raffles.
Gallagher announces annual art contest
Rep. Mike Gallagher has announced the 2023 Congressional Art Competition is open to all high school students that live or attend school in Wisconsin’s Eighth Congressional District.
The Congressional Art Competition is an annual event hosted by the Congressional Institute that highlights the artistic talent of high school students across the country.
“The Congressional Art Competition ensures everyone who visits the U.S. Capitol has the opportunity to see the outstanding talent of Northeast Wisconsin students,” said Gallagher. “Every year, students from across the Eighth District impress me with their skills, and I’m looking forward to seeing their creativity shine through in this year’s submissions.”
All eligible art will be featured in an exhibition at the Trout Museum of Art, third floor “Room with a View Gallery,” in Appleton from April 25 through May 14, and judged by an independent panel of local artists.
The first-place selection will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year, and the next two runners-up will have their artwork displayed in Gallagher’s Washington D.C. and district offices.
All art and required forms must be received at the district office in DePere no later than 4 p.m. on April 20. Artwork may not exceed, when framed, 26 inches by 26 inches and 4 inches in depth and may not weigh more than 15 pounds.
Accepted two-dimensional artwork medium includes the following:
• Paintings — oil, acrylics, and watercolor
• Drawings — pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers
• Collages — must be two-dimensional
• Prints — lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints
• Mixed Media — use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
• Computer-generated art
• Photography

ThedaCare auxiliary offers health care scholarships
ThedaCare Medical Center-Shawano Auxiliary will be offering scholarships for students who are currently enrolled in a healthcare education program and entering their final year of study this coming 2023-24 school year.
Application forms and scholarship guidelines are available through the volunteer services department by calling 715-526-7207 or emailing elaine.gast@thedacare.org. The application deadline is April 15.
Since 1983, the auxiliary has awarded over $115,000 in scholarships. The scholarship program is designed to help students finance tuition for the final year of college or technical school. Students must be a high school graduate or a current resident of Shawano, Menominee, or Waupaca counties or have a parent or grandparent who is employed by or volunteers with ThedaCare.
Delta Kappa Gamma to offer education scholarship
The Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an organization of women educators, has announced that they are offering one $500 scholarship to an eligible college student who is pursuing a degree in education. Applicants must be college or university students who have been admitted to an education program.

Shawano starts April with Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Shawano-Menominee will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 1 at Shawano Community High School, 220 County Road B, Shawano. The public is invited to come enjoy part or all of the day and join hundreds of volunteers and participants at this community event to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and take action to fight against cancer.
The opening ceremony, which includes a special survivors and caregivers lap, will begin at 9 a.m. A luminaria ceremony to honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to cancer will take place at noon.
The theme for this year is “Every Step Brings Hope.” Activities will include a large bucket drawing, pound class, escape puzzles sponsored by Shawano County Library, Cornerstone Chiropractic demonstration, face painting, bounce house, children and adult games, live DJ, concessions and more. Library within reach of $15K matching goal
A third anonymous donor match of $15,000 for Lakes Country Public Library has already brought in $11,200.
With this latest round of donations, the library’s building fund is now over 80% of its $1.5 million goal. To date, $1.25 million has been raised in donations, pledges and grants.
“This is so gratifying. We began formal fundraising less than a year ago at our May 2022 kick-off dinner,” said fundraising chairwoman Kathleen Marsh.
Marsh is hopeful that the final goal will be reached at the second annual library fundraising dinner on May 13. The dinner will take place at McCauslin Brook Golf and Country Club, Dinner tickets are $50 per person, but there are only 70 seats available. Guests can register by calling 920-841-6235.

Cross Walk comes to Gillett for Good Friday
The Gillett-Suring Clergy Association will be hosting a Cross Walk at noon April 7.
The community is welcome to join local pastors as they begin the journey at Gillett High School, 208 W. Main St., Gillett. There will be a brief scripture reading and prayer at each of four stops as the walk makes its way through Gillett.
The Cross Walk is a unique and effective way of identifying with the real Good Friday/Easter message on a personal level. The walk will end at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 101 W. Main St., Gillett, where coffee and snacks will be available.
