David and Heather Pahl will be the latest Nature’s Friend Award winners for private property, while Walsh Dental Clinic is getting the award for the commercial category at Shawano’s Arbor Day celebration next week.
The event begins at 10 a.m. April 26 at Alpine Shores Park, 286 Northridge Drive, Shawano. Mayor Bruce Milavitz will present a proclamation on behalf of the city, and students from Olga Brener Intermediate School, St. James Lutheran School and Sacred Heart Catholic School will plant new trees to accompany the mature trees already there.
Matty Mathison with Shawano Pathways will talk about the GRACE Trail at the park, while Matt Hendricks, the city’s parks and recreation director, will talk about future plans for the park itself.
Flags for Tree City and Tree Line USA will be presented during the ceremony, and Shawano Municipal Utilities will present a $2,000 check to the public works department to plant trees.
4 MIHS students to get NWTC degree at graduation
Four Menominee Indian High School students will be graduating in June with both a high school diploma and an associate degree in liberal arts from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.
Ashlee Corn plans to attend Haskell Indian Nations University and study either counseling, business or journalism.
Alamea Pyawasay will study psychiatry and is planning to attend either Carthage College, St. Norbert College or the University of Minnesota Morris.
Pearson Denny will continue his education by attending University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He has not yet decided on a field of study.
Mariah Fish intends to study business or social work at Haskell Indian Nations University.
“We could not have done it without our families’ encouragement,” said Corn.
“It really helped to know they were there for us, believed in us and pushed us to succeed,” said Fish.
Students were also able to take some of their classes through the College of Menominee Nation.
“We could not be any prouder of these students,” said MIHS principal Kate Mikle. “They not only managed and succeeded in their high school classes over the past two years, but they also took college level classes at the same time, and several of them are also student athletes. So the amount of discipline and focus it took to achieve this is really phenomenal.”
Superintendent Wendell Waukau said the four students will have an advantage as they pursue their bachelor’s degrees.
“They know what to expect from college classes, which is a big help,” he said. “In addition, their credits will transfer toward a bachelor’s degree, so there will be a lot less time and cost as they pursue their post-secondary education.”
St. John, Suring library planning rummage sales
Shoppers are welcome to shop at both the Friends of Suring Area Public Library’s annual rummage sale and the St. John’s Lutheran School sales, which will be held May 11-13 and May 17-19.
The Friends rummage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the How Township garage, 12896 State Highway 32, Suring, north of the Suring hill. The St. John sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the church’s fellowship hall, 8905 St. John’s Road, Suring.
The sales will include clothing, household items, furniture, jewelry, collectibles, and more. Donations are still being accepted, except for electronics.
The Friends of the Suring Area Public Library will be assisted by Thrivent Financial. All proceeds from the Friends’ sale will support programs and services at the Suring Area Public Library. Friends rummage sale donations can be delivered to the How Township garage between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. May 8-10.
All proceeds from the St. John’s sale will benefit the school’s programs and resources.
Library offering cards, cutting fines in April
Shawano County Library is encouraging all community members to visit during National Library Week, April 23-29, to explore all the facilities have to offer. The libraries will be offering 50% off fines, free replacement cards as well as the chance to win a gift card to local businesses.
