4-H Members from Marinette, Oconto, and Shawano counties joined together at Marinette County Camp Bird for a residential camp experience in June.
Ninety campers, 30 counseling staff, and 15 adult staff consisting of University of Wisconsin-Extension professionals, health professionals, lifeguard, and 4-H volunteers were present.
The 4-H counseling staff consisted of teens from across the three counties, with training and team-building activities beginning already in the winter months. The counseling staff learned about ages and stages of child development, health and well-being, basic first aid, neurodiversity, 4-H policy, group builders, preparedness, and more. Together, they planned an engaging schedule for the campers based on the theme “Survivor.”
Campers were youth in 4-H and not yet in 4-H who ranged from third through seventh grade. Some of the camp-wide activities included swimming, canoeing, team-building, launching eggs, building fires, playing team games, learning about dairy nutrition, meeting animals, and hiking.
Campers had to search for their group’s immunity idol, and earned points with clean cabins, manners, and great performances in activities. Some counselors and campers even tried eating flavored crickets.
