Body of missing boater receovered

The body of a Little Suamico man was recovered from the bay of Green Bay on Aug. 24, six weeks after he and his two young children died when their small sailboat capsized on the bay.

A news release from the Marinette County Sheriff’s Department said Billy Salnik, 32, was found shortly after noon Aug. 24 after a boater reported a body in the water near Green Island.

Salnik and his children Joshua, 3, and Charlotte, 5, went sailing from Oconto near the breakwater the evening of July 13 and were last seen near Egg Harbor and Green Island.

Proceedings of Aug. 20

• Jeremy Lee Jackson, 41, Wausau, was sentenced to 20 months in prison, followed by two years of extended supervision, for driving a motor vehicle without consent and a misdemeanor charge of resisting or obstructing an officer, in connection with an incident that occurred Dec. 10.

• A charge of repeated sexual assault of the same child was dismissed against Travis R. Bolssen, 49, Weyauwega, on a prosecutor’s motion a day before a trial was scheduled to begin.

Former chief deputy honored

The Oconto County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 22 honored former chief deputy Darren Laskowski, who retired July 5 after 30 years with the sheriff’s department.

Sheriff Todd Skarban said Laskowski started as a correctional officer and served as a patrol deputy, but the longest part of his career was as an investigator.

“We investigated a lot of things together, and it was the ugly, violent side of things,” Skarban said. He added that it was an easy decision after he was first elected sheriff in 2019 to pick his “trusted co-worker and friend” to be the next chief deputy.

Lena Village Board OK’s apartment project

Site preparation began last week in the northwest corner of Lena after the village board voted Aug. 20 to approve a developer agreement over the objections of several dozen people in attendance and a petition with more than 150 signatures.

Jayme Sellen, executive director of the Tourism and Economic Development Corporation for the Oconto Region, reported to the Oconto County Board two days later that the project is expect to result in 80 apartment units built in three phases.

NWTC hires new vice president for finance

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College has hired Adam Pfost as the vice president of finance and administration.

As a key member of the president’s cabinet, Pfost will serve as NWTC’s chief financial officer, providing strategic leadership and oversight of the college’s financial and operational resources.

In his role, Pfost will be instrumental in ensuring the effective stewardship of NWTC’s finances and resources, supporting the College’s mission and strategic goals.

UW-Extension holding soybean field day

Soybean growers need to manage weeds, diseases, insects, weather impacts, and the grain market. Any one of these can create headaches and they can add up to lots of lost income, especially in an already tight margin year such as 2024.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension is sponsoring a field day Sept. 4 designed to help soybean growers navigate the current marketplace, as well as improve their pest and agronomic management decision-making.

Deputies responded to 38 incidents, including suspicious activity on County Road I in the Town of Stiles, identity theft on Nero Lane in the Town of Little Suamico, animal neglect on Pleasant View Drive in the Town of Chase, automobile theft on Tom Post Road in the Town of Brazeau, two traffic stops, two traffic offenses, three citizen assists, one miscellaneous traffic incident, one welfare check; two 911 hangups and four open lines; one ambulance call; two crashes, involving deer.

Historical society presentation looks at lumberjacks

The Oconto County Historical Society will begin its fall speaker series Sept. 5 by looking at northeast Wisconsin’s lumberjack history.

The program “River Rat: Real Life and Romantic Legend” begins at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the Beyer Home and Carriage Museum, 915 Park Ave., Oconto.
