Spring Community Market is a hit

Cathy and Kevin Erdmann’s herbs and salt shakers were the first thing that visitors to the Ebenreiter Community Center in Gillett saw April 26 during the Gillett Public Library’s Spring Community Market.

The Erdmanns have retired to what they call “Doo-Little Farm” north of the city.

“It’s so we can do as little as possible,” Cathy Erdmann said from behind the table.

The event was the first Spring Community Market hosted by the library in advance of the weekly vendor market it has operated for the past several summers.

• William Jay Reynolds, 24, Cecil, was placed on two years probation after Judge Michael Judge withheld sentencing for felony bail jumping and a misdemeanor charge of battery, in connection with an incident that occurred March 16. Judge ordered probation conditions including 60 days in the county jail.

Trent Maloney Memorial advocates for baseball fields

The memory of 9-year-old Trent Maloney is fueling a drive to build a varsity baseball field or fields at the new Oconto Falls Middle School.

Trent died Feb. 28, 2020, of complications from cardiac arrest a few weeks earlier, and his mother, Randi Maloney, appeared before the Oconto Falls School Board on April 8 to ask their support in the endeavor.

Gillett board considers hiring an SRO

Members of the Gillett School Board want to see some numbers before they commit to hiring a school resource officer to interact with students.

The board heard a presentation from local law enforcement and emergency officials about the advantages of having a police officer or sheriff’s deputy stationed at a school to be available when help is needed.

“This is much more than just purely a law enforcement role, they are actually part of what they do at the school,” said Tracy Ondik, director of the Gillett Ambulance Service, before introducing Police Chief Shane Breitenbach.

HSHS names new Wisconsin president

Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) has announced that Robert J. Erickson, MS, has been named HSHS Wisconsin market president and CEO. Erickson is scheduled to begin on April 29, and succeeds Brian Charlier, who retired in March.

In addition to his market role, Erickson will also serve as president and CEO for HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center in Green Bay. He will also have oversight of the system’s two other Wisconsin-based hospitals, HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls and HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan.

• Scott Glen Sorenson, 59, De Pere, pleaded no contest to operating a motor vehicle with a restricted controlled substance (fourth offense), in connection with an Oct. 10, 2019, crash in the Town of Stiles. Judge Michael Judge levied fines and sentenced Sorenson to 60 days in the county jail with Huber work-release and good time privileges. He revoked Sorenson’s license for 24 months.

Quietly and without fanfare, Oconto Falls Mayor Brad Rice presided over the old business on the council’s April 16 agenda, accepted a plaque thanking him for his service, adjourned and took a seat in the audience to watch newly elected Mayor Clint Braun take the oath of office and conduct the new business.

Volunteers breathe new life into Green Lake Park

Big changes are in store for a former national forest recreation site that has been closed to the public for almost a decade.

The Mountain Historical Society will operate and maintain the former Green Lake Picnic Area in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The park, which will now be known as Green Lake Park, is located near the community of Mountain in Oconto County.
