Homicide by OWI trial postponed

The May 8 trial of an Oconto Falls man for homicide by the intoxicated use of a motor vehicle was postponed when the defense attorney fell ill.

Thomas Edward Wolf, 57, is charged in connection with a crash Aug. 3, 2022, that claimed the life of Bart Erdman, 60, also of Oconto Falls.

Court hearing postponed in fatal motorcycle crash

The court case stemming from a fatal accident on U.S. Highway 41 last summer is being delayed while the defense prepares its own report reconstructing the accident.

Austin Scott Laakonen, 21, Oconto, is charged with homicide by use of a motor vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance, homicide by negligent operation of a motor vehicle and misdemeanor possession of THC, in connection with the crash June 30 just south of County Road W in the Town of Little River.

Butch and Shirley Vorpahl to serve as parade marshals

On July 10, 1969, Butch Vorpahl helmed a U.S. Navy swift boat up the Cua Lon River in Vietnam and into an incident that earned him the Bronze Star Medal.

Vorpahl, now co-owner of Vorpahl Business Services, and his wife, Shirley, have been chosen as grand marshals of the 2024 Oconto Falls Memorial Day Parade.

The parade’s theme is Patriotism, and Barb Salscheider of the parade committee said the Vorpahls were “the perfect choice” to be marshals.

“We couldn’t think of anybody better,” Salscheider said.

Roadwork, draft to challenge Gillett businesses

The City of Gillett has a couple of big issues to prepare for, its Tourism and Marketing Committee chair told the city council May 2.

In his regular report to the council, Alderperson Jerry Luther said the planned reconstruction of state Highway 22 through the city and the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay are likely to have a major impact on traffic through the city.

Fairest of the Fair event set for May 18

The Oconto County Youth Fair has experienced a resurgence in applications for the fair’s official ambassador.

Four candidates for the 2024 Oconto County Fairest of the Fair are scheduled to introduce themselves in a competition starting at 11 a.m. May 18 in the Gillett Secondary School Auditorium, 208 W. Main St. The event is open to the public.

Deputies responded to 36 incidents, including suspicious activity on County Road S in the Town of Pensaukee, sexual assault in Suring, a wanted person on Goldhorn Road in the Town of Brazeau, a noise disturbance on South Green Bay Avenue in the City of Gillett, one traffic stop, two traffic offenses, four citizen assists, one miscellaneous traffic incident, one welfare check; two 911 hangups; one ambulance call; three crashes, one involving deer.

• Katlyn C. Fish, 20, Oconto, waived her right to a preliminary hearing on a charge of child neglect in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred Feb. 25. She filed a request for a change of judge, and the new judge will schedule the next hearing.

State Rep. Peter Schmidt said he welcomes a Republican primary election in the 6th Assembly District, on the heels of Rep. Elijah Behnke’s announcement April 30 that he will enter the race.

Behnke to challenge Schmidt in GOP primary

State Rep. Elijah Behnke has announced his candidacy for the 6th Assembly District seat, setting up a primary contest with fellow Republican Rep. Peter Schmidt.

Behnke scheduled a news conference at Shawano County Republican Party headquarters for April 30 to announce his decision.

Behnke has represented the 89th Assembly District since he won an April 2021 special election to fill the unexpired term of then-Rep. John Nygren. He was re-elected to a second two-year term in November 2022.
