Gardebrecht returns as school board president

Clint Gardebrecht was reelected president of the Oconto Falls School Board by the narrowest of margins May 13.

Gardebrecht won another term by a 4-3 margin over Bryan Baumler, who was then reelected to another year as the board vice president. Sarah Schindel was reelected school board clerk.

4K class at Encompass confirmed

Oconto Falls Superintendent Dean Hess confirmed May 13 that a 4-year-old kindergarten class section will be held at the new Encompass Child Care Center starting this fall.

During the monthly school board meeting, Hess said a 4K class will be held at Encompass during the morning hours, and the teacher — a school district employee — will move to Abrams Elementary School for an afternoon session.

“This is based on the data that we’ve had years past and also the data that we have coming in right now for registrations,” Hess said.

• George Gardea-Eagle, 34, Oconto Falls, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, followed by two years of extended supervision, for possession of methamphetamine, in connection with an incident that occurred Jan. 23, 2023. Judge Michael Judge gave him credit for 26 days already served in the county jail.

Peterson aims to turn 2nd Senate seat to Dems

A retired journalist who teaches at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College’s Shawano campus is on a mission to turn the Wisconsin 2nd Senate District blue, and she made stops May 15 in Shawano and Keshena to meet with people with the message that the Democrats will do a better job of looking out for all of Wisconsin than Republicans.

Kelly Peterson, of De Pere, made her apologies to the Shawano County Democrats at the Shawano Civic Center for being tardy, noting her visit to the Menominee Reservation went past its scheduled time.

Lyerly has eye on Gallagher’s Congressional seat

A Democrat has joined the growing list of people seeking to claim the 8th Congressional District seat formerly held by Mike Gallagher, and she made a visit May 15 to Shawano in the hopes of bringing her fellow Democrats locally out of hiding.

Girl, 13, dies in ATV crash near Bonduel

A 13-year-old girl died May 15 as the result of an ATV crash south of Bonduel.

About 8:30 p.m., the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call indicating there was an ATV crash in the area of Landstad and Two Creek roads. The caller advised there was a girl who was unconscious and not breathing as a result of the crash. Multiple law enforcement officers responded, as well as emergency medical service personnel. The crash occurred on private property near this location.

Hinze challenging for longtime Republican seat

The Republicans found a candidate to get behind for the 6th Assembly District election, and now Democrats have found their own as Shirley Hinze, of Shawano, has announced she’s pursuing the legislative seat.

Hinze said she’s running in the hopes that her community benefits from the actions the Wisconsin Legislature takes.

“In the 10 years I’ve been here (in Shawano), this community has voted Republican,” Hinze said. “I live in this community, and what do we get? Nothing. They keep voting for this and this, and there’s nothing coming back into the district.”

Encompass ready to open June 10

Encompass Early Education and Care is actively recruiting staff and signing up families for its new child care center in Oconto Falls, now officially scheduled to open June 10.

A ribbon cutting has been scheduled for 4-6 p.m. June 4 at the former Kaempfer and Associates building at 650 E. Jackson St., which has been transformed over the past few months from an engineering firm’s offices into a multifaceted educational center for children from 6 weeks to 12 years old.

Steffen getting to know new district

State Rep. David Steffen held a listening session in Oconto Falls on May 8 to start getting to know the needs of constituents he gained in the recent redistricting.

The maps drawn by Gov. Tony Evers, and approved last winter by the legislature after a court battle, reconfigured the 4th Assembly District to include part of southeastern Oconto County, beginning with the new term that begins Jan. 7, 2025.

• Bond was set at $3,000 cash for Brett Joseph Bertrand, 43, Abrams, after he was charged with fleeing an officer in his vehicle and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred May 8. Judge Michael Judge adjourned his initial appearance until June 13.
