Suspect pleads not guilty in flight to Texas

A child sex assault suspect who allegedly fled the state a few weeks before his scheduled trial pleaded not guilty Sept. 6 to a felony charge of bail jumping.

Michael James Bullock, 41, of Suring, was slated to stand trial beginning July 31 on two counts of the repeated sexual assault of a child, as well as several counts stemming from allegedly stationing a hidden camera in a bathroom and recording intimate video of a young girl showering.

Gillett Chamber creates Forever Fund

Funds from the former Revitalize Gillett nonprofit organization have been transferred into the new Gillett Area Chamber of Commerce under the title Forever Fund.

“We are currently accepting applications out of that fund to help beautify the city, maybe do some facade work and things for businesses,” Alderperson Jerry Luther said during the Sept. 5 meeting of the Gillett City Council. “Anyone who had applications in before should resubmit them to make sure they’re current.”

Gillett library to collect Halloween costumes

The Gillett Public Library is collecting Halloween costumes to share with children whose parents may not be able to afford them.

Shannon Stoner, library director, reported to the Gillett City Council on Sept. 5 that people are invited to drop off gently used, clean Halloween costumes at the library, starting Sept. 17.

“Throughout the whole month of October, kids can come in and choose a costume,” Stoner said. “I found out that a couple of libraries actually do this. It’s for people who don’t have money for a child’s Halloween costume, and they can come in and take one.”

Baxter, 27, Marinette, pleaded no contest to possession of methamphetamine, in connection with an incident that occurred June 9, 2021; felony bail jumping, in connection with an incident that occurred May 22, 2022; and another count of felony bail jumping, in connection with an incident that occurred April 6. Judge Michael Judge scheduled sentencing for Nov. 11 and ordered a pre-sentence investigation.

Deputies responded to 35 incidents, including suspicious activity on East Forrester Road in the Town of Lakewood, fraud on County Road M in the Town of Lena and on Brookside Cemetery Road in the Town of Pensaukee, an ATV accident near West Butler Rock and Airport roads in the Town of Mountain, a drug investigation in Oconto, one traffic stop, one citizen assist, three miscellaneous traffic incidents, one welfare check; three 911 hangups and one open line; one ambulance call; two crashes, one involving deer, one involving a turkey.

Oconto’s Harvest Fest returns Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. when downtown Oconto transforms into the ultimate fall playground, with free fun, food, and festivities for the whole family.

Main Street will be buzzing with excitement as it closes to vehicles and opens up to a lively parade of vendors, arts and crafts, and delicious seasonal treats.

St. Clare observes 10th anniversary with HSHS

HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls marked an important milestone Sept. 1: The 10th anniversary of the hospital (formerly known as Community Memorial Hospital) officially joining Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS).

The hospital has been a part of the Oconto Falls community for more than 100 years. It first opened its doors in 1921 as Oconto Falls City Hospital at 125 S. Main St. Then, in 1954, it was moved to the former City Hall and named Community Memorial Hospital (CMH). The hospital moved to its current location at 855 S. Main St. in 1972.
