Suring veteran recognized with Old Glory Honor Flight

SURING — Friends and family say Joe Trever didn’t talk much about his service during the Vietnam War, but that has changed since he experienced Northeast Wisconsin’s Old Glory Honor Flight on Oct. 23, as a thank you for his service.

The Old Glory Honor Flight organization offers a whirlwind one-day guided tour of Washington, D.C., to veterans of World War II, the Korean War, or Vietnam War. The trip includes a number of surprises including a huge welcome-home celebration at the airport when they land back in Wisconsin.

Oconto Falls hospital sets visitor restrictions during flu season

OCONTO FALLS — In response to an increase of flu cases in the region, visitor restrictions are now in place at all HSHS – Eastern Wisconsin Division hospitals, including HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital in Oconto Falls.

The restrictions also affect HSHS St. Vincent and HSHS St. Mary’s in Green Bay, and HSHS St. Nicholas in Sheboygan.

Restrictions are as follows:

· No visitors under the age of 12 in inpatient areas.

· No visitors of any age with flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, cough, runny nose, fever, vomiting or diarrhea.

OCONTO FALLS — As we take down the 2019 calendar and hang the new 2020 calendar on the wall, we look back on a year when Mother Nature did her best to beat down Oconto County but persistence and a sense of humor got things done, when leadership changed suddenly, and when justice proved to be something that can happen quickly or over a matter of decades.

Annual Gillett Wreath Hunt is on

GILLETT — For the 14th year the Gillett Public Library is coordinating a “wreath hunt” that encourages families to enjoy time together as they travel around Gillett during the holidays in search of the answers.

Several businesses have wreaths on display, and there’s a question to answer for each one. Families and groups have the entire month of December to collect the answers, and they can win prizes. Many families and friends do this hunt every year, and it’s become a part of their holiday traditions.

Heckendorf Award nominees sought

NEW Credit Union is seeking applications for the 18th annual Harold P. Heckendorf Community Service Award, which is open to anyone who has displayed exemplary community service and volunteerism.

Harold P. Heckendorf served as a volunteer on the credit union’s board of directors for 20 years, serving as chairman much of that time. He died in 2001 at age 77.

Gillett superintendent search to start soon

GILLETT — The search for a new superintendent of schools got off to a rocky start Dec. 18 when one of the consultants hoping to help the Gillett School District find a new leader hit a deer on the way to the meeting.

The consultant for the Wisconsin Association of School Boards was shaken up but uninjured, Superintendent Todd Carlson said. The school board likely will schedule a special meeting to hear WASB’s pitch.

Oconto County Board approves new election machines

OCONTO — Voters will be choosing a president on new machines this year, after the Oconto County Board voted Thursday to purchase Dominion brand voting systems from its vendor, Command Central, on behalf of all 26 municipalities.

County Clerk Kim Pytleski told supervisors she dragged her feet a little in replacing the old Edge system, where people have voted electronically on a touchscreen and their choices were printed out on a roll of paper that served as the official backup record. She said those devices have served the county well for a decade.

Internet access applications for northern Oconto County filed

OCONTO — With an unprecedented amount of available funds, Oconto County is hoping to continue improvements to internet access to the northern towns in the latest round of broadband expansion grants from the state of Wisconsin.

The Oconto County Board on Thursday approved resolutions in support of grant applications being submitted by Bertram Communications and NSight Telservices for a portion of the $24 million in available grants. The applications were due later that day.

Oconto County mission statement gets final OK

OCONTO — Oconto County is officially a great place to live, work and play from the shores of Green Bay to the Nicolet National Forest.

The Oconto County Board on Thursday gave its final blessing to its mission statement, developed over a series of meetings and homework exercises going back close to a year.

“What a great way to end a year — by adopting a mission statement,” said Dale Mohr, community development educator with the University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension, which was known simply as UW-Extension when the process began.

NEWCAP receives state grant for mobility management efforts
