OSMS moves to new location in Oconto Falls

OCONTO FALLS — Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Specialists — a physician-owned orthopedic, sports medicine and rheumatologic practice with locations throughout northeast Wisconsin — has relocated its Oconto Falls clinic.

The new location is within HSHS St. Clare Memorial Hospital, 835 S. Main St., Oconto Falls. The former location was along East Highland Drive.

Campbellsport principal selected as Gillett superintendent

GILLETT — The principal of Campbellsport Middle and High School has verbally accepted the position of Gillett superintendent of schools, according to the district’s search consultant.

Contract negotiations were underway late last week with Todd Hencsik, who has been with the Campbellsport School District since July 2014 and has also served in Milwaukee, Waukesha and Rockford, Illinois, schools during a 24-year career in education.

Warning gates ordered for Brown Road RR crossing

MADISON — The state Office of the Commissioner of Railroads has ordered that warning gates be added and warning lights upgraded at the Brown Road crossing in the town of Little Suamico.

The order issued Feb. 3 follows the recommendation of an investigator who inspected the crossing in June 2018.

The Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad runs an average of two train movements per day along the single mainline track that runs through the intersection, and an average of 2,719 vehicles cross the tracks each day, according to the order. The posted speed limit is 35 mph.

Suring Dollar General holds grand opening

SURING – Shoppers have a new option in downtown Suring with the opening last week of Dollar General’s newest store at 611 E. Main St.

Dollar General celebrated the store’s official grand opening at 8 a.m. Saturday with free prizes and special deals. The first 50 adult shoppers at the store received a $10 Dollar General gift card, and the first 200 shoppers were given a Dollar General tote bag with complimentary product samples, among other giveaways.

Whitney Morgan Helms, 24, Little Chute, pleaded no contest to possession of methamphetamine, in connection with an incident that occurred Dec. 9. Judge Michael T. Judge scheduled sentencing for April 20 and ordered a presentence investigation.

Machickanee Flowage draw-down planned for this fall

OCONTO — A one-year draw-down of the Machickanee Flowage was among the water quality projects discussed Thursday as the County Board got an update on the progress of the Oconto County Healthy Waters program.

“This is a proposal, and it’s still a work in progress, but we’re working for a draw-down starting in September of this year until September of next year,” said Steve Dupuis of the Machickanee Advancement Association, one of four lake associations that reported on studies and projects affecting 27 of Oconto County’s 375 lakes.

New Lakes Country Library Board named

LAKEWOOD — Per the 2019 Joint Library Agreement reached by the Northern Oconto County towns of Doty, Lakewood, Riverview and Townsend, a new Lakes Country Public Library Board has begun its important work.

The new board of trustees began meeting in January to assume oversight of the library, which is located in Lakewood. Their charge, as defined in the Department of Public Instruction’s Trustee Essentials Handbook, is to “protect and advance the interests of the broader community by effectively governing the operations and promoting the development of the local public library.”

Oconto Falls Community Library exhibit features student art

OCONTO FALLS — The artistic achievements of over 400 students from kindergarten through 12th grade will be represented in the Youth Art Month exhibit at the Oconto Falls Community Library during March.

A special reception for all artists and their families is scheduled from 6-7 p.m. March 5 at the library, 251 N. Main St., Oconto Falls. The public is invited to view chocolate cakes, pastel animals, clay figure and animal sculptures, acrylic paintings, photography and other works.

County Board approves ATV/UTV route segments

OCONTO — All-terrain vehicle riders will be able to travel legally along 15 stretches of Oconto County roadway after action taken by the County Board on Thursday.

The measures taken without discussion allow for ATV and utility vehicles to traverse as much as 2.36 miles on county roads to get from one segment of the county’s ATV/UTV trail network to another.

The new ATV/UTV routes recommended by the board’s Highway Committee and unanimously approved by the full County Board:

Oconto County Board creates flooding project account

OCONTO — With land along the shore of Green Bay threatened by flooding this spring due to record-high Great Lakes water levels, the County Board on Thursday transferred $50,000 to create a Southern Oconto County Flooding Project Account as part of the Emergency Management Department budget.

The new account will pay for such projects as the Highway Department’s filling 11,200 sandbags at a cost of $12,000, for example, Administrative Coordinator Kevin Hamann told the board.

Some sandbagging may be needed near the courthouse, Hamann said.
