Accused murderer still needs a public defender

The Oconto County office of the State Public Defender came up short in its effort to find an attorney for a man accused in the shooting death of a Green Bay man in an alleged dispute over drugs.

Manuel Antonio Herrera-Hernandez, 33, of Green Bay, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of a man identified in court records only as MGP, whose body was found in a snow-covered ditch on Lade Beach Road in Little Suamico on Feb. 22, 2021.

Oconto Falls Municipal Utilities sends help to Florida

Oconto Falls Municipal Utilities, the community’s locally owned, not-for-profit municipal electric utility, is sending help to the people impacted by Hurricane Ian.

The utility answered a call for mutual aid by sending two lineworkers, John Salscheider and Justin VanderBloemen, to Florida. They drove down with a utility truck and are expected to remain in the area helping to restore power and perform recovery work for a week.

Governor’s office interviews Oconto County DA candidates

Interviews were conducted Sept. 30 for the vacant position of Oconto County district attorney, and local officials are hopeful a new DA will be appointed in the very near future.

Edward Burke Jr. resigned Sept. 1 after more than a decade as the county’s chief prosecutor. He spent most of the summer on medical leave.

The office has also been without an assistant district attorney since Lisa Rowe joined the Dane County district attorney’s office in May, although she has continued to serve as prosecutor in several major Oconto County cases.

Trial postponed for man charged in heroin death

The trial of a man charged in connection with a fatal heroin overdose was postponed Oct. 3 as Oconto County continues without a full-time district attorney or assistant district attorney.

Jason T. Lipp, 34, Oconto, had been scheduled to stand trial Oct. 18-21 on charges of first-degree reckless homicide, in connection with the death of an Oconto Falls man in 2020. Lipp allegedly sold heroin to the man, who is identified in court records only as BSS.

• Micky W. Michalak, 54, Oconto, pleaded no contest to taking and driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent and misdemeanor criminal damage to property, in connection with an incident that occurred May 18, 2020. Judge Michael T. Judge approved a deferred judgment agreement on the felony charge and placed Michalak on one year of probation. Among the probation conditions he must maintain full-time employment and have no contact with the company involved.

Hearing postponed in 10th OWI case

A Mountain man charged with his 10th offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated made an appearance in Oconto County Circuit Court on Oct. 3 long enough to schedule another appearance.

Martin Cooper, 52, is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (10th offense), operating a motor vehicle with a prohibited alcohol content (10th offense), three misdemeanor counts of bail jumping, and a misdemeanor charge of operating while his license was revoked, all in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred Dec. 7, 2020.

Reinke named to WBA Leaders in Banking Excellence

John K. Reinke, The Stephenson National Bank and Trust (SNBT) chairman of the board and former bank president, was honored by the Wisconsin Bankers Association (WBA) for his excellence in banking, community service, and civic involvement.

A celebration was held recently at the WBA headquarters in Madison, where an installation displays the Leaders in Banking Excellence Wall. Established in 2020, the wall serves as a tribute to 22 outstanding current and former bankers including SNBT’s prior chairman, Mary Staudenmaier, who was inducted in 2021.

Teachers ‘volunteer’ requirement eliminated

A policy instituted a few years ago requiring Oconto Falls teachers to work three events a year without compensation has been repealed.

During its Sept. 19 meeting, the Oconto Falls School Board voted unanimously to remove language about the policy from the teacher handbook. Teachers who failed to help out at the requisite three school events were being charged $25 per event they didn’t work.

Deputies responded to 33 incidents, including a wanted person on Pulcifer Road in the Town of Gillett, suspicious activity on state Highway 22-32 in the Town of Oconto Falls, a double homicide on Melissa Boulevard in the Town of Little Suamico, a death investigation at an address in the Town of Morgan, a wanted person at the Brown County Jail in Green Bay, five traffic stops, two traffic offenses, one citizen assist, three miscellaneous traffic incidents; three 911 hangups; three ambulance calls; three crashes.

Man taken into custody after double homicide in Little Suamico

A 27-year-old “person of interest” is being held after two people were found dead outside their Little Suamico home Oct. 2.

Sheriff Todd Skarban says the Oconto County Emergency Dispatch Center received a call at 9:04 a.m. that two people had been found not breathing and without pulse outside a residence in the 1200 block of Melissa Boulevard in the Town of Little Suamico.
