Driver in fatal crash ticketed for OWI

Authorities say the driver who crossed the center line in a fatal head-on crash Sept. 8 was driving under the influence and after his license had been revoked.

Zackery Dale Wimber, 30, of Fond du Lac, was ticketed for operating under the influence and causing injury for at least the second time, operating while revoked and three other traffic violations, according to an Oconto County Sheriff’s Department traffic report released Sept. 18.

Wisconsin had 6.8 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending Sept. 15, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Dry weather allowed for good progress on many field activities, including harvesting corn silage, cutting hay, seeding winter wheat and manure application.

Topsoil moisture condition rated 5% very short, 35%, 59% and 1% surplus. Subsoil moisture condition rated 3% very short, 23% short, 72% adequate and 2% surplus.

UW Extension holding cover crop field day

Farms are increasingly utilizing cover crops as a method of managing soil erosion and improving overall soil health. Cover crops are known to have benefits, but they can also have drawbacks in some situations.

University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension is conducting a cover crop realities field day next month to help farmers think through the opportunities that cover crops offer, as well as how to optimally manage them for maximum benefit.

Mursau receives Friend of Housing Award

Brad Boycks, executive director of the Wisconsin Builders Association, presented Rep. Jeff Mursau, R-Crivitz, with the 2024 Friend of Housing Award at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

“In Wisconsin and across the country, there is a housing supply gap, which leads to higher prices for renters and homebuyers,” said Mursau. “The cost of housing is going up, and people’s paychecks can’t keep up. This session I was proud to support a number of bipartisan legislative proposals to encourage growth in the building industry and help struggling families with rising housing costs.”

Hillside Assembly hosting homecoming after-party

All middle and high school students are invited to the Fifth Quarter Party at Hillside Assembly, 5890 State Highway 22, Gillett, after Gillett Secondary School’s homecoming game.

The festivities will begin at 8:45 p.m. Oct. 11. There will be free pizza, hot chocolate, slushies, music, games, ga-ga ball pit, prizes given out every 15 minutes and more.

Progress seen on redevelopment, housing project

Progress is being seen toward filling two long-empty businesses at the west city limits of Oconto Falls, and a potential affordable housing complex is also taking shape, the city council learned at its Sept. 10 meeting.

City Administrator Peter Wills said he and Fire Chief Tim Magnin recently gained access to the interior of the former Mobil station and convenience store at 710 County Road B for a fire inspection and found it in “reasonably good condition.”

Magnin said they found some code violations but found the building is in better shape than they expected.

State corn production expected to decline

Wisconsin corn production is forecast at 535 million bushels, down 3% from the previous year, according to the latest USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service – Crop Production report.

Based on conditions as of Sept. 1, yields are expected to average 182 bushels per acre, down one bushel from the Aug. 1 forecast but up six bushels from last year.

Corn planted acreage is estimated at 3.75 million acres. An estimated 2.94 million of the acres planted will be harvested for grain, unchanged from the previous forecast.
