Leeder set to stand trial

It has been more than a year since Mindy S. Leeder was charged with one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct in a case of gun waving at a park in Wittenberg.

Now, it appears that Leeder’s case will be moving forward to trial, which won’t take place until January 2025.

If convicted, Leeder faces $25,000 in fines and 12 1/2 years in prison for the first-degree recklessly endangering safety count and $1,000 in fines and 90 days in jail for the disorderly conduct count.

New owner takes over Wittenberg restaurant

July 13 was a big day for Sabina Adiloska. That was opening day for her as the new owner of the Wittenberg Family Restaurant, 101 N. Genesee St.

“I had always wanted to own my own restaurant business one day, but I knew what it took — the time and dedication — so I wanted my girls to finish school before I took on something like this,” Adiloska said.

The former owners were Saby and Sead Polaaski, and they had the three boys. Adiloska is the younger sister to Saby Polaaski.

Tavern League to hold golf outing

The Shawano County Tavern League will hold its first ever golf outing Aug. 17 at the Shawano Lake Golf Course.

Registration will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. There will also be raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle, random hole prizes, hole events and payouts.

The four-person team scramble event costs $75 per golfer. This includes 18 holes of golf with a cart and a pasta buffet dinner.

WASP swimmers compete at state meet

Audrey Wierzba and a Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) medley relay team were among those participating in the 12 & Under Long Course Meter Summer State Championships at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer on July 26-28.

In the girls 11-12 category, Wierzba, 12, placed 30th in the 200-meter breaststroke in 3:25.58; 42nd in the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:35.96; 51st in the 50-meter breaststroke in 44.27; and 56th in the 50-meter freestyle in 35.47.

• Jeffrey D. Rockman, 42, Wittenberg, pleaded no contest April 22 to eight counts of felony bail jumping, two counts of possession of methamphetamine, misappropriating ID information to obtain money and misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, victim intimidation and resisting or obstructing an officer. Judge Katherine Sloma withheld sentencing Juky 23 and placed him on five years of probation with conditions including up to 180 days in county jail.

WASP’s Aubrey Wierzba wins regional title

Aubrey Wierzba was crowned the 100-meter breaststroke regional champion at the 2024 Wisconsin Summer Regional Championships hosted by Rocket Aquatics in Brown Deer on July 20-21.

Joining Wierzba, 12, in competing for the Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) were Rylee Crick, 14, and Aislyn Sauter, 12. The swimmers were coached by head coach Brenna Opper and coach Lauren Bahr.

New K-9 to join sheriff’s department

With the retirement of Arres earlier this summer, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department found itself in the market for a second K-9.

“We have a dog (female Malinois) reserved,” said Capt. Nick Prey, who oversees the K-9 program. “Training will be in mid-November 2024; dates are not set yet. The master trainer is Tony Pallotta from Toronto, Canada. He puts on his own handler training course.”

In addition to a new K-9, a new handler will also be chosen. Prey said two deputies have applied to be the handler, with interviews held July 29.

Ad hoc building committee appointees approved

It took some time, but Shawano County Board Chairman Tom Kautza finally has a full slate for the county’s ad hoc building committee.

The 11-member panel was approved at the July 24 meeting of the County Board.

Previously, Kautza was having difficulty finding business representatives from the three sections of the county — east, central and west.

Now named to the committee are John Jacobs Jr. of Green Valley Dairy for the east, Sam Crawford of TimberPro for the central and Regan Mongold of Cirrinity for the west.

Ethics Committee will soon be busy

A trio of Shawano County residents will join two Shawano County Board supervisors as they delve into ethics cases involving county employees.

County Board Chairman Tom Kautza appointed the three people at the July 24 board meeting.

Chris Holewinski will represent the county’s east end, former Supervisor Mike Stupecky will represent the central portion, and Jim O’Neil will represent the western end.

They will join Supervisors Kimberly Leffel and Lowel Hammett, who were appointed at the start of the board’s current term.
