Directors choose comedy for WBHS play

Final preparations are underway for the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School spring play “You Can’t Take it With You,” by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart.

This show is a comedy in three acts. It premiered on Broadway in 1936 and was made into a movie in 1938.

Weekends are wonderful, or so I’ve been told. For me, they rarely turn out like I plan. I’m sure I’m not the only person who looks forward to a weekend of rest and rejuvenation, only to spend the better part of a Saturday searching for a garage that does auto repair emergencies. They do exist; they just close at noon, which isn’t much help when your problem starts at 11:30 a.m. and you’re a half hour away.

Resch Lanes receives Business of the Year award

Resch Lanes was named the 2018 Member of the Year at the Wittenberg Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet Saturday at Lisa’s at Lakeside in Hatley.

For more than 100 years, members of Lions Club International have been serving their communities and helping to support friends and neighbors. Locally, that mission is being accomplished by the 25 members of the Wittenberg Lions Club. But there are still more roles to fill, and new members are always welcome.

Cabin fever is in the air

We live in Wisconsin. This is something we choose to do. With that choice comes the obligatory commitment to speak long and often about the weather and to share our opinion of it.

I’d venture to guess that no one really cares too much about the weather, since there is nothing we can actually do about it, except move.

For most people, especially the timid who might have underdeveloped conversation skills, the weather is a topic that can provide an easy way to start or end a conversation. It’s part of the fabric of our lives. It helps us to be better socialized people.

Allen Mahnke retires after 22 years of service

After 22 years of service at the Wittenberg Telephone Company, plus another 23 years of service in the communications business, Allen Mahnke retires Thursday.
He has witnessed and navigated through significant changes in the industry over the years as a world with rotary dial phones and telephone booths with pay phones on street corners gave way to Internet-based services.

“We had four- and eight-party lines when I first started,” Mahnke said.

Q: This is the first time doing a murder mystery. How did this idea come to pass?
A: Ho-Chunk Gaming Wittenberg is always looking for new, innovative techniques and events to have for our guests. The idea came from the creative vision of marketing director Tracy Pecore.

Memories to fill a lifetime

“I’ve known her since I was born.” Those are usually words you can say at someone’s funeral when you grow up and live in a small town. For many, that means that they’re related; for others, it means they were good neighbors or friends.

I hadn’t gone to many funerals when I lived in Minneapolis during my adult years. I had never been able to say that at any of those I attended.

On Saturday, I was able to go to the funeral of a woman who had known me all my life. For the first eight years of my life, our families lived on the property where my dad and her husband worked.
