DA’s office moving to paperless environment

Months of testing will soon result in one aspect of the Shawano and Menominee Counties District Attorney’s office becoming paperless.

Kay Zuleger, legal secretary in the DA’s office, told the Shawano County Public Safety Committee on June 5 she is ready to make the change effective July 15.

“Once our office goes paperless, and that’s hopefully in the future, it’ll be very nice,” she said. “The whole program will run seamless. It’s all a work in progress, but this is something I’m willing to do already, and I’m ready to make that change.”

Wittenberg swimmers earn top spots at Howard-Suamico

Members of the Wittenberg Area Swim Program (WASP) collected several top 10 finishes June 1 at the Howard-Suamico Summer Swim Meet.

In the 8 and Under division, Lucy Wierzba, 6, placed sixth in the 25-yard backstroke in 24.72, third in the 25-yard breaststroke in 30.35, seventh in the 25-yard freestyle in 21.74 and second in the 100-yard individual medley in 2:04.9.

Brinley Wierzba, 9, competed in the Girls 9-10 division and placed sixth in the 50-yard backstroke in 46.92 and sixth in the 50-yard freestyle in 38.15.

The cheese stands alone at Wittenberg Community Days

Weather can sometimes make or break a small-town celebration like Wittenberg Community Days.

Mother Nature didn’t have any tricks up her sleeve for this year’s event, which wrapped up a three-day run June 9 under mostly sunny skies with a parade, live music, midway carnival rides, vendors and raffles — and, of course, deep-fried cheese curds courtesy of the Wittenberg Lions Club.

The club set up its familiar bright yellow cheese curd trailer, a fixture at the festival for years.

• A jury on March 27 found Kevin R. DeGroot, 43, Seymour, guilty of four counts of battery or threat to a law officer and one count of resisting an officer causing substantial bodily harm. On June 6, Judge William Kussel sentenced him to six years in prison, followed by six years of extended supervision with conditions.

Birnamwood Polka Days returns for third year

Enjoy what is technically the last weekend of spring by kicking up your heels and sliding along the dance floor at the annual Birnamwood Polka Days on June 14-16.

Headquartered at Chet and Emil’s, 388 Main St., Birnamwood, the event will feature hardwood dance floors inside and outdoors.

“We started it (Birnamwood Polka Days) back up three years ago, and we’ve had amazing feedback from the community,” said Tanya Tautges, lead organizer.

Teen rehab center proposed near Bowler

An Adolescent Recovery and Wellness Center (ARWC) could soon find its way to the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.

A public hearing on the proposal will be held at 9 a.m. June 15 at the Orion Event Center at North Star Mohican Casino Resort.

The $18 million ARWC would be operated by the Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council (GLITC).

Sheriff’s department seeks ARPA funds

Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner said even though he was told to scrap all future ARPA fund requests, he asked the county public safety committee to recommend a pair of projects on behalf of the sheriff’s department.

And the committee agreed, sending both requests to the executive committee for consideration.

Lenzner first said the county is required by state statute to have a dive team. He wants to replace the current vehicle with a new trailer to haul the necessary rescue equipment.

Shipping containers still a hard ‘no’

Make no mistake about it. Placing a shipping container on your property and using it as a storage unit is not allowed under Shawano County zoning rules.

Many residents are finding that out the hard way.

Jessica Van Buren, zoning administrator, said when officials are notified of a resident with a shipping container on their property, a letter is sent to the homeowner giving them 30-60 days to remove it or face a daily fine.
