Main St., Shawano; bail jumping on Old Lake Road in the Town of Wescott; operating while intoxicated on Lake Drive in the Town of Wescott; five 911 calls; five reckless driving incidents; two traffic hazards; one welfare check; one crash.

County parks launches new reservation website

Campsites, pavilions and shelters, as well as pontoon boats and short-term dock rentals, at Shawano County parks can now be reserved through a new website.

The site, www.shawanocountyparks.com, was launched in spring, officials said.

Matt Hietpas, the county’s technology services director, said they’ve already seen increases in inquiries due to the new website.

Newcap hopes to expand housing options

Plans are in the works to convert a 28-room resort motel into housing for low- to moderate-income (LMI) people, but local officials are opposed to the change.

Newcap Inc., which provides a myriad of services and programs for those in need, wants to remodel the White Pines Lodge, N9117 Big Lake Road, Town of Red Springs, into apartments for LMI residents.

ARPA fund requests for county tabled

Three requests to use federal funds for courthouse and sheriff’s department projects have been tabled for a month, a decision made June 19 by the Shawano County Executive Committee.

“We have a jail project that was a CIP (capital improvement project) that came in way over budget as you recall,” said Jim Davel, administrative coordinator. “The original estimate was $1.2 million. We had budgeted … $415,000.”

This project is to replace the controls and building automation system of the jail and sheriff’s department heating, ventilation and air conditioning units.

New ad hoc building committee moves forward

Shawano County officials will once again work toward a long-range building plan, with members of the county’s executive committee reaching a consensus on the idea at their June 19 meeting.

Kurt Berner, vice president of The Samuels Group, Wausau, which was recently tasked to review the county building plan studies over the past 40 years, told County Board Chairman Tom Kautza he is willing to donate his time to facilitate the meetings.

Leadership Shawano County seeks new class members

Leadership Shawano County is designed to assist in the preparation of a strong, diverse group of leaders qualified to represent the greater Shawano County area and willing to make responsible decisions affecting the public and private sectors.

Members of the class of 2024-25 are now being sought. The application deadline is July 15.

Man threatens deputies with explosives

A portion of state Highway 29 was shut down overnight June 20 as law enforcement negotiated with a man who threatened them with explosives and other devices, the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department reported.

According to a statement from the sheriff’s department, at about 12:30 a.m., a caller reported a man with a truck and camper that appeared to be disabled on the side of the highway.

The caller also reported a man near the truck threw a folding chair at the caller’s semi as he drove past.

Work begins on U.S. Highway 45 in Shawano County

Gov. Tony Evers signed a $4.1 million contract to improve U.S. Highway 45 between Wittenberg and Antigo from state Highway 29 to the Langlade County line. Work is scheduled to begin June 24.

Northeast Asphalt, Inc is the prime contractor for the project. Crews will remove and pave new asphalt surface, replace culverts and guardrails along with pavement markings and centerline rumble strips.

During construction hours, one lane of traffic will be closed as necessary, with standard flagging operations. Access to local residences will be maintained during construction.

Community prepares for Tilleda Fun Dayz

Summer is officially here, and that means it’s time once again for the annual Tilleda Fun Dayz celebration.

As is customary the past several years, the event will be held under a tent in the parking lot of the Wright Place Bar and Grill, N6185 County Road D, Tilleda. The celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 30.

Harley and Mary Wright are coordinators of the event, along with the Tilleda Sno-Riders. The Wrights started helping with the celebration in 2000 and have been working with the Sno-Riders to keep it going ever since then.

The beat goes on for polka event in Birnamwood

While hundreds of people had a front-row seat for the annual Birnamwood Polka Days parade June 16 in Birnamwood, Keith Alft and Loah Horton had something else in mind — taking in the sights and sounds of the music they grew up listening to as kids.

The Tigerton residents, now senior citizens and best friends, set up their chairs in the three-day festival’s music tent and listened as members of the Polish Connection set up their instruments and ran through a soundcheck before taking the stage for a four-hour set.
