Retzlaff says charges are ‘fraud’ in hearing

Ann Retzlaff continued to be defiant in court May 9, claiming the staff at the Shawano County Jail continued to hamper her ability to retain counsel to represent her, as well as continuing to claim the court had no jurisdiction over her and that she was trying to be silenced.

Event scheduled to support youth fighting leukemia

Doc’s Harley-Davidson in Bonduel will be hosting a celebration and fundraiser for a youth 2-year-old who is battling leukemia.

Amira Rynish, of Green Bay, was diagnosed with leukemia last June, said her aunt, Ashley Pearce.

“She was diagnosed about a week after her second birthday,” said Pearce. “The recovery for leukemia is about 2½ years of active chemotherapy treatment, in addition to steroids and other chemotherapy drugs.”

Pearce added that Rynish is being treated at the Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee.

Leadership Shawano County hosts recovery celebration

Recovery was at the forefront of a Franklin Park celebration on May 1.

Leadership Shawano County hosted a recovery celebration and awareness walk in the hopes of educating more people in the community about addiction recovery and mental health resources.

“This is our first annual recovery awareness walk,” said Vicki Weaver, a member of Leadership Shawano County. “It is an event to help recognize the people that are struggling with addiction and to honor those who have lost family members that have struggled with addiction.”

Teachers, support staff get 4.7% raise

The Shawano School Board signed off on a pay raise for teachers and support staff May 2, although it was far from unanimous and far from easy.

Motion to reduce Retzlaff’s bond denied

An effort by Ann Retzlaff to lower the $25,000 bond she’s currently in jail on was denied May 2, and a planned preliminary hearing was delayed after Retzlaff revealed she was, once again, without an attorney present.

• Waylon R. Thiex, 24, Birnamwood, was charged April 25 with one count of bail jumping and one misdemeanor count of operating without a valid license (second in three years). Judge Katherine Sloma set a signature bond of $750 and scheduled a resumed initial appearance for May 31.

Sturgeon make a splash in Shawano

They’re called lake sturgeon, but last week, they were the kings and queens of the river.

The prehistoric-looking fish arrived along the shores of the Wolf River near New London and Shiocton April 25 for their annual spawning run, with many of those fish eventually working their way up to the dam in Shawano.

Several people showed up below the dam April 29 to get a close-up view of the fish.

The crowd included Joe Keuler and his daughters from Madison, as well as Joe’s father, Bill Keuler, who made the trip from Wild Rose.
